The Two Biggest Gangster Movies Of All Time Head To Prime Video
Fans of classic cinema – specifically of the mafioso variety – are in for a treat next month as The Godfather and The Godfather Part II will find their way onto Prime Video. Whether it’s your first time or 100th tuning in for the classic Francis Ford Coppola film, you never need an excuse to turn down the lights, pop some popcorn, and settle in for two of the most iconic (if not the most iconic) gangster films of all-time.
With a stacked cast, an incredible storyline, and perhaps even more behind-the-scenes drama than what was going down in the plot, the first two titles of The Godfather trilogy are absolute must-watches when they arrive on streaming.
The Godfather
With a legacy almost bigger than Hollywood, the first installment in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy made its way onto screens back in 1972, long before anyone could have dreamt of an in-house streaming option. The debut film was co-penned by Coppola and writer Mario Puzo, who wrote the best-selling novel on which the movie was based. Filling out the cast was a, quite frankly, insane lineup of talent that included Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall, and more.
Kicking off the trilogy with a bang, the first film introduces audiences to the Corleone family, an Italian-American family who all fall in line under their patriarch, Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando). Over a decade, audiences tag along with the illegal goings on of the connected family and watch as Vito’s youngest son, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), moves from a disinterested and unattached outsider to the family’s cutthroat leader.
While we can only imagine how incredible it must have been to see this one-of-a-kind, action-packed story performed by all of these top-tier actors on the big screen, streaming the movie from the comfort of your own home is certainly a close second.
A box office success, Coppola’s introduction to the Corleone family blew the top off the box office, originally earning more than $81 million during its initial release against its $6-7.2 million production budget. Over the years, through multiple re-releases, the movie has seen that number grow by leaps and bounds, with the film’s total haul between $250-291 million. With the popularity of The Godfather in mind and its availability on streaming not just now but also in the past, it’s wild to think about how many people have seen the film over the last more than 50 years.
The Godfather Part II
Two years later, The Godfather Part II was released into cinemas, continuing the story of Michael Corleone’s (Al Pacino) takeover of the family while also blending in the origin story of how a young Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) moved his life from Sicily to New York City.
Another massive box office success, the Paramount Pictures film has amassed a whopping $93 million lifetime haul against its $13 million production budget. Those who catch The Godfather Part II on streaming will be treated to two legends on the rise as both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro deliver knockout performances in the sequel.
Streaming The Movies
After you’re done watching The Godfather and The Godfather Part II on Prime Video next month, you can hop over to Paramount+ where a separate TV series titled The Offer is now streaming. The show pulls the curtain back on the stranger-than-fiction story of what went on behind the scenes to bring the original film to cinemas and is worth the watch for those enamored by the films.
The Godfather and The Godfather Part II will begin streaming on Prime Video on November 1.
