TNT Saves Fan-Favorite Series After Being Cancelled
It’s time for fans of The Librarians: The Next Chapter to celebrate, as TNT has saved the show from cancellation, picking it up after The CW dropped it from their Fall lineup. The show is the latest entry in a longtime fan-favorite franchise that goes back two decades. After the announcement that The CW was dropping the project, many assumed it would be canceled, but it has been saved by the same Network that created the franchise.
The Librarians
The Librarians: The Next Chapter aired on The CW in May of 2023 and ran for a single season, before being removed from the schedule on August 16, 2024.
The show was picked up quickly, with Warner Bros. Discovery adding it to the lineup for TNT. This early on it’s unclear what TNT’s plans are for the show, but it can’t be any worse than cancellation.
As part of a beloved franchise The Librarians: The Next Chapter brings an established fandom, making it more significant than a standard one-season genre show.
The franchise began in 2004 with The Librarian: Quest for the Spear a made-for-TV movie that spawned a pair of sequels. That series of TV movies was followed by The Librarians, a popular spin-off show that ran for four seasons.
Back Home To TNT
The Librarians: The Next Chapter’s move to TNT is a return home for the franchise. TNT has an established relationship with the franchise as the home for the original TV movies and the first series.
It’s also a good fit for TNT which is moving back into original dramas, giving the network an established property to lean on as they release new shows like Debriefing The President.
The franchise will still be produced by Electric Entertainment, the production company run by showrunner Dean Devlin. Devlin has been with the franchise from the beginning, and the fact that Electric Entertainment is still producing the show means changes to The Librarians: The Next Chapter should be minimal.
A New Team
While it’s building on a pre-existing world, The Librarians: The Next Chapter tells a new story, making it easy for new fans to jump into, another bonus for TNT. It continues the role of Librarians in the series as custodians of dangerous magical artifacts.
The latest show features a Librarian from the past who time travels to the present and gets trapped, forcing him to establish a new team to help him deal with the magic he unleashed with his time travel.
The Cast
Of course The Librarians: The Next Chapter is great news for the show’s cast. The main cast consists of Callum McGowan, Jessica Green, Olivia Morris, Bluey Robinson, and Caroline Loncq. Christian Kane also had a recurring guest role, returning as Jacob Stone, his character from the first show.
A Natural Home
It’s become fairly common for networks and streaming services to save shows from cancelation, and The Librarians: The Next Chapter coming to TNT feels like a natural move. The franchise’s roots in the network make it a natural home for the show, which didn’t get the chance to develop at The CW. Hopefully, the show can thrive at TNT and bring fans of the franchise more modern-fantasy fun.
