New Star Trek Movie Coming Sooner Than We Thought

By TeeJay Small | Published

Fans of the ever-expansive Star Trek franchise have been waiting for the upcoming film Star Trek: Section 31 to get a formal release date for some time. Now, we can confirm that the film is set to premiere on January 24 via Paramount+. The release date was made public during a recent panel at New York Comic Con, which also included first looks at upcoming adventures in Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks.

Section 31 Releases On January 24

Though the film has been in development for years, the January release date serves as a pleasant surprise for fans of the franchise, as general audiences have heard very little about the production process behind Star Trek: Section 31 since filming wrapped back in March.

With any luck, the film will see a great deal of success on the Paramount+ platform, and eventually pave the way for additional feature length Star Trek outings on the streamer. Though it isn’t getting a wide theatrical release, Star Trek: Section 31 is the first full-length film within the franchise to come out since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, which starred Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Zachary Quinto.

A Discovery Spinoff

In case you’re not caught up on the background of Star Trek: Section 31, the direct-to-streaming film is set to be the first feature-length spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery. The project will star Michelle Yeoh, reprising her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, as she embarks upon a mission to join an ultra-secret division of Starfleet known as Section 31.

Star Trek: Section 31 was originally conceptualized as far back as January 2019, though the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shut-downs throughout 2020 and beyond halted progress on the film significantly.

The Cast

Joining Michelle Yeoh in the cast of Star Trek: Section 31 are plenty of talented performers who are newcomers to the Star Trek universe. These actors include Humberly González, Kacey Rohl, Robert Kazinsky, James Hiroyuki Liao, Sven Ruygrok, Omari Hardwick, and Detroiters‘ Sam Richardson. The film was written by the creator of CBS’ Limitless series, Craig Sweeny, with frequent Star Trek: Discovery director Olatunde Osunsanmi helming the project.

More Lower Decks And Strange New Worlds On The Way

Overall, it seems as though 2025 will be a massive year for Star Trek super-fans, as new episodes of Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and more are on pace to release shortly after Star Trek: Section 31 premieres. During the Comic-Con panel, series leads and executive producers directed viewers to some first looks at the forthcoming fifth and final season of Lower Decks, including a clip that showcases the USS Cerritos coming face-to-face with foreign variants of themselves from an alternate timeline.

Likewise, Strange New Worlds showrunners gave us plenty to look forward to by announcing a few big-name guest stars and planned adventures for their third season.

Premiering On Paramount+

While many of these projects are still awaiting an official release date, one thing’s for sure: fans will definitely be flocking to Paramount+ on January 24 to catch Star Trek: Section 31 as it premieres. Those who have been following the film’s tumultuous production schedule will surely be relieved to learn that the feature-length movie is completed and nearly ready to be streamed.
