Sci-Fi Drama Brings Inventive New Approach To Time-Loop Formula
By now, the Groundhog Day formula has splintered off into its own genre, with droves of films and even video games following the plot of a character reliving a single day, week, or hour over and over again. While these films have become a dime a dozen in the recent Hollywood landscape, one upcoming film appears to be turning the entire concept on its head, with the introduction of a single bizarre element. The film, titled Omni Loop centers on a character who has a black hole growing like a tumor inside of her body, causing her week to reset indefinitely as she seeks medical help.
Take a look at the trailer for Omni Loop:
The trailer for Omni Loop first premiered on YouTube on August 13, offering a first look into the film’s plot, premise, and characters. Per the trailer, the main character of the movie, Zoya Lowe, takes an experimental medication to treat her black hole illness, which makes her week reset, meaning she only has a brief seven-day cycle to meet the scientists and doctors who can help her engineer time travel, study the mass and its effects, and- god willing, develop a more permanent cure. The premise seems to be an extremely refreshing and intriguing sci-fi twist on the classic Groundhog Day formula, causing Omni Loop to stand out in a sea of familiar films.
Brazilian filmmaker Bernardo Britto serves as the writer-director for the upcoming project, following a flurry of well-received short films and animated ventures.
Omni Loop is currently on pace to receive a wide release in theaters on September 20, 2024, though some critics have already lauded the film after catching the premiere at South by Southwest earlier this year. Initial reactions to Omni Loop have been overwhelmingly positive, resulting in a shocking 100 percent certified fresh critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. While this score could certainly change after the film’s wide release, the critical acclaim has certainly helped to boost excitement for the movie, with many fans flooding the comments section of the trailer to express their intention to buy a ticket.
Many of the comments on the YouTube trailer highlight Ayo Edebiri’s involvement specifically, as the young woman’s star has been significantly rising since The Bear first premiered.
Brazilian filmmaker Bernardo Britto serves as the writer-director for the upcoming project, following a flurry of well-received short films and animated ventures. Apparently Britto first penned the screenplay for Omni Loop back in 2017, before submitting it to the Sundance Institute Screenwriting Lab, which it ultimately won. As a result, the production was funded in part by Amazon Studios, as well as a grant from the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.
Mary-Louise Parker is poised to star in Omni Loop, alongside such talented performers as Carlos Jacott, Hannah Pearl Utt, Fern Katz, Steven Maier, and The Bear co-stars Chris Witaske and Ayo Edebiri. If their interactions in the trailer are any indication of the film’s final cut, Mary-Louise Parker’s Zoya Lowe and Ayo Edebiri’s Paula Campos will spend the majority of Omni Loop‘s run-time working closely together, despite the fact that Paula will need to be briefed on their friendship at the onset of each resetting week.
The premise seems to be an extremely refreshing and intriguing sci-fi twist on the classic Groundhog Day formula.
Those intrigued by the premise of Omni Loop should be sure to check this film out when it premieres on September 20. With any luck, the film will live up to its high expectations, and deliver one of the best Groundhog Day-style films since the original premiered in 1993.
