New Looney Tunes Movie On The Way Despite Coyote Vs. Acme Being Shelved

By TeeJay Small | Published

Fans of the classic Looney Tunes characters that have been wreaking havoc on television and film screens for nearly a century were truly dismayed last year when they learned that the completed film Coyote Vs. Acme was being shelved, never to see the light of day. While many have maligned Warner Brothers executives such as David Zaslav as making this decision for some kind of cheap tax write-off, others have assumed that the iconic toons have simply lost face in the modern cinematic landscape. Luckily, this doesn’t seem to be the case, as the next Looney Tunes movie, titled The Day The Earth Blew Up, has officially received a theatrical release.

Looney Tunes Heading To Theaters This February

Per an exclusive report in Deadline, the Looney Tunes movie will hit theaters on February 28, 2025, meaning the release is just a few short months away. The film initially premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival over the Summer, and received a flurry of excellent press from critics and audiences alike in attendance.

Though The Day The Earth Blew Up was conceived as a Max original outing, the excellent reviews have encouraged the studio to give the film a proper release, in a small but significant victory for fans of the franchise.

Preventing An Alien Invasion

The Day The Earth Blew Up is set to be the first theatrically released Looney Tunes movie since 2021’s critically panned Space Jam: A New Legacy. The movie is said to center on iconic Looney Tunes characters Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, as they team up to prevent an alien invasion that threatens the very fabric of life on Earth.

Cartoon Network Writer Makes Directorial Debut

Uncle Grandpa creator and long-time Cartoon Network writer Pete Browngardt is set to direct the Looney Tunes movie in his feature film debut, with long-time Looney Tunes voice talent such as Eric Bauza and Candi Milo attached to lead the cast. Saturday Night Live‘s Laraine Newman and Seinfeld’s Wayne Knight are also among the limited voice cast.

Warner Bros. Can’t Cancel This One

The Day The Earth Blew Up is to be released by Ketchup Entertainment, who bought the rights from Warner Bros back in August. This means that the Looney Tunes movie will be the first fully animated outing from the franchise to see a global theatrical release, and only the second ever to not be distributed by Warner Bros, after 1975’s Bugs Bunny Superstar. The independent film distributor has also had a hand in releasing such beloved features as Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Ferarri, and Ozi: Voice of the Forest.

The Looney Tunes Renassaince

All things considered, it looks like things are shaping up for The Day The Earth Blew Up to be one of the most beloved feature-length Looney Tunes outings of all time. The film’s early reviews already indicate that it will be significantly more well-received than both Space Jam: A New Legacy and 2003’s Looney Tunes: Back In Action combined.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see how things pan out, though, as long as Warner Bros doesn’t actively torpedo this film like they have with Coyote Vs. Acme, we’ll be more than happy to check it out.
