Netflix Quietly Snubs Cult Comedy And Deletes Promotional Posts

By Becca Lewis | Published

Detroiters is a hilarious precursor to I Think You Should Leave on Netflix that’s finally been added after some hiccups in the run-up to its release. Sam Richardson and Tim Robinson star in this single-camera buddy comedy about a pair of bumbling ad men who try and fail to grow their business and prove themselves to their company. The show was scheduled to go live on Netflix on October 15 but wasn’t available until the 16 after a series of promotional social media posts were deleted.

Netflix Deletes Promotional Material

Baffled Detroiters fans were confused by the botched release of the cult series on Netflix and felt betrayed after they couldn’t find the show on its planned drop date. The confusing release came after all of the promotional material for Detroiters was removed from social media and the show was removed from the Netflix release calendar. But then, without any explanation as to the promotions being pulled, the show appeared a day late, allowing fans to access it.

Netflix Is The Chump Of The Day

Netflix hasn’t been forthcoming on the reason for their late release of Detroiters, and the quiet deletion of promotional posts is also still a mystery. In true Detroiters fashion, several fan accounts dragged Netflix, calling them “Chump of the Day” after a fictional news segment from the show. Netflix’s only public comment on the controversy was to post a photo of Mort Crim, the real former Detroit news anchor on their comedy X account called NetflixIsAJoke, alluding to the joke news segment.

Finally On Netflix

The Detroiters fans were outraged by the perceived snub from Netflix, taking to social media and threatening to cancel their subscriptions to the streaming service. After initially suspecting that Netflix planned a complete removal of the series, Detroiters was finally added without fanfare on October 16, the day after it was originally scheduled to drop. While audiences were relieved to see the series up, they’re still confused as to why Detroiters was given such poor treatment by Netflix.

Detroiters

Unlike Sam Richardson and Tim Robinson’s sketch comedy show, I Think You Should Leave, Detroiters has at least the shades of a grounded plot, with the backstories of the main characters containing some classic sitcom elements like jobs and romantic entanglements.

Both I Think You Should Leave and Detroiters are now streaming on Netflix, and fans of the more recent and more surreal I Think You Should Leave can check out Sam and Tim’s earlier project if they haven’t already. The format of Detroiters is more traditional than that of I Think You Should Leave, but the comedy style is classic Sam and Tim.

Fans Saved The Day?

Saving Detroiters was what fans had hoped for when they created a mini social media storm protesting the series disappearing from the Netflix lineup, and it looks like they got their way. The cult series is now available and whether or not fans were the decisive factor in the decision, they’re happy to see their beloved comedy series finally on a streaming platform.

Hopefully, audiences will now be able to save their commentary for comedic controversies like whether or not a local wig company is using hair from cadavers to make their products.
