Marvel Icon Nearly Spoiled The MCU’s Biggest Secret Yet
If you’ve been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some time now, you’re likely already aware of the fact that Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has a penchant for spoiling upcoming events in interviews, social media posts, and other media appearances. Due to his reputation in this regard, the actor recently took to the Rich Roll Podcast on YouTube to explain that he has actively avoided the press in recent months. As it turns out, Tom Holland made this decision independently to avoid spilling the beans on Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom.
Tom Holland Kept A Secret
Over the years, Marvel heads have tried a number of tactics to prevent Holland from spoiling major plot details and actor appearances in their forthcoming films. In fact, when RDJ’s Tony Stark was killed off back in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the Spider-Man performer wasn’t even told that he was attending the character’s funeral in the film’s final scene. With Tom Holland being such a massive spoiler liability, you can imagine the trepidation that Kevin Feige and company must have felt when they learned that he was in on the Doctor Doom reveal.
Holland Knew The Identity Of Doctor Doom
Apparently, Tom Holland had been speaking to Downey about his Doctor Doom role long before the information was revealed to the public back in July. In a moment of clarity, the actor made the prudent decision to avoid all interviews and subsequent Marvel questions until after the announcement was made at the now-iconic Marvel Comic-Con panel, which saw RDJ taking the stage before tearing off the Doom mask.
As we are all now aware, the former Iron Man will be debuting his take on the iconic Fantastic Four villain in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday. For now, there’s no information on whether this iteration of Doom will be a one-off or a Marvel mainstay.
Infamous For Leaking Marvel Plots
According to his comments on the podcast, Tom Holland claims that he knew he would spoil the Doctor Doom reveal if given the chance. This is further evidenced by the existence of a viral YouTube compilation which sees the Peter Parker performer spoiling numerous MCU secrets for 13 minutes straight. The video, which touts millions of views, sees Holland slipping multiple times on live shows and in front of crowds, prompting several of his Marvel castmates to leap forward and abruptly cover his mouth.
Other Stars Were Caught Off Guard
It’s actually rather shocking that Tom Holland was aware of Downey’s Doctor Doom return in the first place, as many other MCU players, such as Sebastian Stan, famously had no idea until it was revealed on the Comic-Con stage. The fact that Holland was clued in, despite his rampant spoiler problem, truly illustrates how close he and his on-screen mentor have grown since first sharing the screen in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.
Holland Isn’t Spilling The Beans About Spider-Man’s Future
In fact, not only has Tom Holland remained tight-lipped about the Doctor Doom secret, but he has also managed not to leak any information about his own future with the MCU. Holland was last seen in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which concluded with his character tragically being forgotten by everyone in his known universe. With Peter Parker’s identity essentially wiped from history, fans are exceedingly curious as to where that leaves the Avenger in future MCU outings.
