Marvel Actress Wants Re-Do Of Avengers Role

Zoe Saldana may have the single most impressive resume in all of Hollywood due to her leading performances in Avatar, Star Trek, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and many other massive franchises. Despite her prolific screen presence over the years, the Gamora actress claims that she wishes she could get a re-do of her roles in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Per a report in Variety, Saldana failed to understand Gamora’s arc at the time of production for those films, leaving her a bit underwhelmed by her own performance in hindsight.

Zoe Saldana Didn’t Understand Gamora

This is certainly a case of an actor being their own worst critic, as critics and audiences alike have raved over the success of Infinity War and Endgame in the years since they’ve released. Still, Zoe Saldana has explained that she understands Gamora’s arc in the Marvel Avengers outings much better now than she did during the production period, which makes her wish that she could have given the performance a little more emphasis.

Specifically, she explained “I wish I could go back and redo it so I could push a little harder because it was such a great opportunity to play a daughter having issues with a dad and whether or not she’s having this opportunity to reconciliate or to simply just walk away. That would’ve been a great opportunity had I been a little more aware of it then.”

Elsewhere in her Variety interview, Zoe Saldana praised Joe and Anthony Russo for their top-shelf writing and directing on the Marvel Infinity saga conclusion, and expressed gratefulness that the filmmaking duo chose to highlight Gamora so heavily in their films.

Before Infinity War, Saldana had only appeared in the MCU in the first two standalone Guardians of the Galaxy films, meaning she had only ever worked with James Gunn to bring the character of Gamora to life. Swapping directors dead in the center of a trilogy, only to pivot back to Gunn’s vision for the third and final volume of the Guardians franchise must have been something of a herculean effort.

For those who don’t recall, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora serves as the estranged daughter of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though this is brought up in the first two volumes of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Infinity War expands upon their relationship in an extremely meaningful way, and even sees Thanos sacrificing her on the planet Vormir in order to procure the soul stone. Saldana is obviously a crucial component to the success of both films, which is why it’s so surprising to hear her say that she wishes she could get a redo.

Will Gamora Return?

Despite her comments, Zoe Saldana claims that she likely won’t be returning for future Marvel installments, as she concluded Gamora’s arc in last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Though there’s no official word from Disney regarding the future of the characters, it does seem like most of the Guardians crew are content to jump ship and follow James Gunn over to DC, now that he’s got the reigns.

Still, Gunn and others have stated that there’s no need for Marvel and DC to be in direct competition with one another, as the franchises are at their best when they build off of a shared success.

While Zoe Saldana certainly won’t have an opportunity to remake Marvel’s Endgame any time soon, she may have another shot at bringing a comic book character to life in the DCU. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
