As the American presidential election of 2024 continues to heat up, voters across the nation have been inundated with attack ads, insufferable debate talking points, and extremely polarizing news coverage. While parsing through the insanity of modern politics can be quite an exhausting task, there is one man who makes the whole experience fun and enjoyable. That man, Jon Stewart, is not only the former and returning host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, he is also the auteur behind the hilarious political comedy film Irresistible, which released in June of 2020.

Irresistible

If you’re reading this, you’re almost certainly aware of Jon Stewart’s resume, as the brilliant satirist took on the desk of The Daily Show for over 15 years. After Stewart left his full-time hosting gig in 2015, he took some time to fight for the rights of 9/11 first responders, raise farm animals with his family, and helm a few politically charged films with wildly varying tones.

His debut movie, Rosewater told the harrowing true story of a journalist who was unlawfully detained by the Iranian government, while Irresistible is a fictional satire about the American political pipeline.

Gary Zimmer

irresistible

The narrative of Irresistible centers on a campaign consultant for the Democratic National Convention named Gary Zimmer, as portrayed by the always hilarious Steve Carell. After suffering a few devastating electorate losses at the hands of the Republican Party in 2016, Zimmer is desperate to find exciting new candidates for his side, who can rouse difficult-to-reach crowds from across the political spectrum.

In a stroke of incredible luck, Zimmer stumbles across a viral video of a retired Marine from Deerlaken, Wisconsin, who gives a moving speech regarding immigration to his local town hall, igniting a flurry of applause from his peers.

A Political Battleground

On a whim, Zimmer takes a flight to the small rural town of Deerlaken, with the express intention of backing the veteran, Chris Cooper’s Jack Hastings, to run in the upcoming mayoral election. Though Hastings is hesitant at first, he eventually agrees to mount a campaign under Zimmer’s guidance, which inadvertently turns Deerlaken into a battleground of national importance.

As Irresistible continues building toward its shocking and hilarious climax, the film provides a surprisingly nuanced and unbiased glimpse into the charade that is American politics.

The Cast

Steve Carell and Chris Cooper are joined by a host of talented performers in the cast of Irresistible, including Rose Byrne, Will Sasso, Brent Sexton, Topher Grace, Mackenzie Davis, and Orange Is The New Black‘s Natasha Lyonne.

The film failed to make a massive profit at the box office, partially because it was scheduled for release right at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, producers behind Irresistible were able to heel-turn and deliver the film via video-on-demand platforms, resulting in the movie topping the iTunes charts as the most purchased movie on its opening weekend.
