Smash Hit Showtime Psychological Horror Series Is Now On Netflix

Now that Showtime is no longer, having been consumed by its parent company Paramount and merged into Paramount+, shows that have been stuck on less popular streaming services are finally appearing on platforms people use. Dexter enjoyed a recent resurgence when it arrived on Netflix, and now, finally, the psychological survival horror series Yellowjackets is being recognized as the amazing show that it is. Season 1 of the hit series is now available on Netflix.

The Past And The Present

Yellowjackets is unlike any other show, and if you try to describe it to someone, you sound like a crazy person. The story covers two time periods: 1996, when a girls’ soccer team is struggling to survive in the wilderness following a plane crash, and 2021, when the survivors have moved on with their lives but can’t escape what they did back then. The 1996 time period is straight-up horror involving cannibalism (not a spoiler, which means yes, it gets worse) and bizarre mysticism, while 2021 is more of a mystery.

From Survivial Horror To Murder Mystery

The sudden change in tone from the psychedelic campfires to the more contemplative murder mystery only adds to the sense of unease from watching Yellowjackets. You should know that the 1996 timeline does include lots of gore and some disturbing scenes, so viewer discretion is advised, but that said, the entire series is well-written throughout, with great performances from both sets of stars. If something doesn’t make sense, or a sudden jump to a flashback is disorientating, keep watching; it’s done on purpose.

A Talented Cast In Both Time Periods

The cast of Yellowjackets helps elevate the material; even when it could veer too far into being campy, they bring it right back on track and make it seem sinister and terrifying. A few of the highlights are the character of Shauna, played in 1996 by Sophie Nelisse and in 2021 by The Last of Us villain Melanie Lynskey, Taissa, played by Jasmine Savoy Brown in 1996 and The Blacklist’s Tawny Cypress in 2021, and of course, Misty, played in 1996 by Samantha Hanratty and Christina Ricci in 2021.

Christina Ricci

When I first started watching Yellowjackets, at the urging of my brother, who has never championed a show like he has this one, it was mainly to see what Christina Ricci was up to. By the end of Episode 2, you’ll hate Misty, and by the end of Season 1, you’ll…probably still hate Misty but respect the job Ricci does in making her offputting. Or maybe you’ll understand where she’s coming from; it’s that type of show.

Available To A Wider Audience

REVIEW SCORE

Yellowjackets was a hit with fans and critics from the first episode, with Season 1 earning an amazing 100 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and Season 2, which is not currently on Netflix, is not far behind with a 93 percent rating. Now that it’s available to a wider audience get ready for more people to discover the series, which, thankfully, is coming back for a third season. Given how Season 2 ends, I need closure, especially since Season 3 is adding Community’s Joel McHale and Hilary Swank to the cast.

You can stream Yellowjackets Season 1 on Netflix and enjoy the most original new show in years.
