One Of The Most Highly Anticipated Sequels Sets Summer Release
Things are about to get a whole lot freakier as one of the most eagerly awaited sequels is on the way. The timer is officially counting down to the return of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in the Disney comedy feature Freakier Friday, as the movie is set to arrive on August 8, 2025. The follow-up chapter, more than two decades in the making, is expected to be a gargantuan hit among millennials who will be reliving some of the best days in cinema through the sequel.
Freakier Friday Is On Its Way
In 2003, audiences were first introduced to the powerhouse duo of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday, which took much of its story from Mary Rodgers’s 1972 book of the same name. In the feature, the mother and daughter, respectively, are at complete odds with one another until their lives are switched, with one forced to literally walk a mile in the other’s shoes. For years, audiences have clamored for the next installment, and now Freakier Friday is closer than ever.
The Plot Is A Closely Guarded Secret
While a plot for Freakier Friday hasn’t been specifically spelled out at this time, we know that the movie will pick up two decades after the original events and will see both Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) as more grown-up versions of themselves. We recently saw the next generation of strong family dynamics play out in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice between Winona Ryder’s Delia Deetz and Jenna Ortega’s Astrid Deetz, so we’re hoping to see a similar vibe carry through in the Freaky Friday sequel.
Even The Supporting Cast Is Coming Back
Further diving into the overflowing pot of nostalgia, not only will Freakier Friday see its two leading ladies return for another go around, but plenty of the other original cast members will also be back in action. Fangirls of One Tree Hill and A Cinderella Story can expect to see Chad Michael Murray reprise his role as Jake, while Mark Harmon will return as Ryan. They’ll be joined by the likes of Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Christina Vidal Michell, Rosalind Chao, and Stephen Tobolowsky, while The Acolyte’s Manny Jacinto and Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’s Julia Butters join the budding franchise.
A Generational Hit
Marked with the Certified Fresh stamp of approval, Freaky Friday sits on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics rating of 88 percent. The movie was a financial success for Disney, earning a whopping $160.8 million against its $26 million. And, it’s easy to see how the studio got so many butts in seats as it featured two uber-popular actresses from different generations to up its viewership range. Freakier Friday looks to continue the streak of good luck, tossing in the nostalgia factor for some extra ticket sales.
Coming In 2025
When it comes to sequels, the longer a fandom is kept waiting, the less likely the movie will ever be made. Luckily, the folks behind Freakier Friday never really strung us along, first introducing the title one year ago and now giving it its August 2025 release date. It’s a great time to be a millennial.
