Back in March, we came to you with the exclusive report that Henry Cavill would be making an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine as a multiverse variant of Logan. With the release of the long-awaited threequel, our scoop has been confirmed. Not only does Cavill make a cameo as Wolverine, but he’s one of the only Wolvie variants not played by Hugh Jackman.

A Wolverine Variant Montage

So while it should pretty much be a given at this point, we’ll nevertheless warn you that SPOILERS are to follow for Deadpool & Wolverine.

Henry Cavill shows up in Deadpool & Wolverine during a multiverse montage. Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson swipes one of the TemPads from the Time Variance Authority, and goes hopping through Marvel’s multiverse in search of another Logan.

Even without Henry Cavill, this sequence promises to be a Wolverine fan’s slice of heaven. We get a bunch of different versions of the character lifted from the comics, most played by Jackman—e.g., a Patch Wolverine, an Age of Apocalypse Wolverine, a crucified Wolverine straight from the iconic cover of 1989’s Uncanny X-Men #251.

And finally, there’s the Henry Cavill Wolverine.

When Deadpool arrives in the world with the Henry Cavill Wolverine, the Merc with a Mouth seems to recognize him. He’s about to say that from behind he looks like Cavill, when the Logan variant turns around to reveal it is, indeed, the former Superman actor, who Deadpool gleefully calls “Cavillrine.”

Henry Cavill sports a hair style not unlike Jackman’s in the scene, and he’s characteristically chomping on a cigar. Things don’t go too well for Deadpool however—the variant punches the merc across the room.

Why Is Henry Cavill Playing Wolverine?

Before you think this means Henry Cavill will be the new Wolverine for the MCU, temper your expectations. We don’t want to spoil any more than we have to about threequel—suffice to say there’s nothing in the film to indicate this is more than a fun cameo.

It’s more likely Henry Cavill made his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine purely as a nod to one of the more popular fan-castings. Even before Cavill was forced to retire as DC’s Superman, his name was one of the most often mentioned by fans—along with other popular fan-castings like Tom Hardy, Daniel Radcliffe, Taron Egerton, and even Danny DeVito.

Henry Cavill And The MCU

Nor does Henry Cavill’s cameo as a variant Wolverine in any way cancel the possibility that he could return for a more substantial Marvel role in the future.

On one hand, he would be far from the first actor to potentially play multiple roles in the MCU.

With the Marvel Netflix shows being deemed official MCU canon for example, Luke Cage stars Alfre Woodard and Mahershala Ali have both been cast in more than one MCU role. Likewise, Gemma Chan played both a villain in 2019’s Captain Marvel and a hero in 2021’s Eternals.

On the other hand, fans have pointed out that the former The Witcher star would be perfect as a number of Marvel heroes. Plenty of Henry Cavill fans, for example, want to see him play Brian Braddock aka Captain Britain, even more than they wanted him as Wolverine.

Captain Britain would potentially be a perfect fit not just for Henry Cavill, but for the MCU’s current storyline. In the source material, Captain Britain has close ties not only to Marvel’s multiverse, but to the X-Men.
