Halle Berry Has Raunchy Message For Catwoman Haters
While the MCU and DCEU have both had some major misfires, neither of these cinematic universes gave us the worst superhero film ever made. Back in 2004, the solo superhero film Catwoman was released, and most fans and critics agreed that it stunk so bad it should have stayed in the litter box. Two decades later, though, Halle Berry has a raunchy message for Catwoman haters: “Critics said it sucked b*lls,” she said, “but b*lls aren’t that bad.”
The Tonight Show
The context for this hilarious quote is Halle Berry appearing on The Tonight Show, and it wasn’t long before host Jimmy Fallon wanted to know how she felt about her infamous Catwoman film 20 years later.
Before she ended up comparing the film’s criticism to the male anatomy, she summed up how her perspective differs from those of the critics. Even though the film “got panned,” she “loved it.”
A little later in the interview, Halle Berry discussed how happy she is that Catwoman has been rediscovered by a new generation of film fans who really appreciate it. “The children have found it now on the internet, and they love it,” she said.
The star described how this newfound appreciation is “so vindicating” and how much she appreciates the different perspective the younger audience is shining on her most controversial film: “they’re saying it’s cool and what the heck was everybody’s problem with it.”
Halle Berry Wants To Direct
Interestingly, Halle Berry confirmed to Fallon that she’d be interested in returning as Catwoman under one condition: that she got to direct the film. She certainly has the skills: the Oscar-winning actor stepped into the director’s chair for the first time with Bruised, the 2020 Netflix film.
In addition to having a willingness to direct her own Catwoman comeback, Berry previously described what she would do with the film if given the opportunity to helm it.
A Different Story
In an earlier interview, Halle Berry described how her superhero remake would differ from the movie that we got in 2004: “I would have Catwoman saving the world like most male superheroes do, and not just saving women from their faces cracking off,” she said.
This is, of course, referencing the Catwoman film’s bonkers plot about its titular character fighting an evil beauty company instead of a proper supervillain. Berry also said she “would make the stakes a lot higher” and create a film “more inclusive of both men and women.”
Berry Gets Blamed
Given these earlier comments, it’s clear that Halle Berry knows that the Catwoman movie is flawed, so why is she so annoyed by the fans and critics who complain about it?
In another recent interview, she admitted that she’s always hated being blamed for the film’s failure. Rather than focusing their range on the failed film’s writer or director, many fans have inexplicably decided to blame the lead actor.
Deserves Another Shot
That wouldn’t make sense for any film, but it’s particularly bizarre for this one because Halle Berry is an Oscar winner; accordingly, when she showed up to personally accept the four Razzies for Catwoman, she mocked her own 2002 Academy Awards speech and held up her Oscar, both reminders of what a great actor she really is.
Given her talent in front of and now behind the camera, we are confident that she could create a really great remake of Catwoman.
How cool would it be if Halle Berry brought us something dark and gritty with a title like Catwoman Returns? It sounds crazy on paper, but in a world where we’re getting a Joker musical, anything can happen.
Anything except us watching Catwoman again—with respect to Halle Berry, we submit this is one case where b*lls are, in fact, that bad.
