Good Omens Is Coming Back To Amazon But There’s A Catch
When showrunner Neil Gaiman was accused of multiple instances of sexual assault, the third season of Good Omens was called into question. After the now-controversial author stepped away from his role in the show, Amazon announced that the show would get a finale. However, that finale won’t be in the form of a full season, but a single movie-length episode.
The Good Omens Conclusion
Amazon’s plans compromise between canceling the show outright and giving it the planned final season. Good Omens Season 3 will consist of a single 90-minute episode designed to wrap up the loose ends from the first two seasons. While fans are sure to be disappointed at the lack of a proper final season, at least they can look forward to a finale, something not every show gets.
Originally released in 2019, Good Omens is a religious fantasy based on Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel bearing the same name. It’s about the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley who decide to team up and prevent Armageddon and save the Earth, which they prefer over their respective divine homes. It focuses heavily on their relationship as they embark on their world-saving quest.
A Star-Studded Amazon Hit
Good Omens was a hit for Amazon in its first two seasons, lauded for its great cast and ability to blend religious fantasy with comedy. Despite its religious themes causing controversy, it was a popular show that won critics and fans over, earning 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Its star-studded cast includes David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Anna Maxwell Martin, Frances McDormand, Adria Arjona, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall, and Brian Cox.
The Neil Gaiman Controversy
Showrunner and writer Neil Gaiman is the reason Good Omens is receiving a truncated final season. Earlier this year he was accused of sexual assault by two women, one a fan and another his former nanny. Since those accusations went public, two other women have come forward and claimed the author abused them.
While Gaiman has denied the accusations against him, he offered to step down from his role on Good Omens to help the show avoid controversy. That seems to have worked to some extent, with Amazon giving the show one last episode to finish its story. However, Gaiman’s departure puts the show in an awkward production position, as his co-showrunner Douglas McKinnon left the show after its second season, meaning it now lacks a showrunner altogether.
With a drastically reduced runtime and the absence of both of its showrunners, Good Omens Season 3 has its work cut out for it. Rob Wilkins and Josh Cole will serve as executive producers on the final episode, but it’s unclear who will step up as showrunner. It’s also unknown who will write the finale, though John Finnemore who co-wrote Season 2 with Gaiman is a likely candidate.
It’s a shame to see a beloved show like Good Omens receiving a half-hearted ending, but it’s better than nothing. Hopefully, the show’s strong source material and stellar cast can make up for the behind-the-scenes problems and the negative association with Gaiman. The finale is scheduled to shoot in early 2025, so fans will have to wait to find out if the show can stick the landing despite everything.
