Disney+ Cancels Multiple Beloved Movies And Shows From Platform And Fans Aren’t Happy
Streaming giant Disney+ is once again the center of fan controversy, this time after releasing a lengthy list of movies and television series that are being eliminated from its platform. The recent announcement has fans outraged from all corners of the globe who took no time in expressing their disgust at the company on various online forums.
Togo And A Small Light
While the platform will still retain its most monumental titles from the Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar lines, fans will no longer be able to see A Small Light or Togo, according to their September 29 announcement.
The full list of Disney+ cancellations include other beloved productions that have large fan bases that are teaming with disappointment. America’s Funniest Home Videos: Animal Edition, Freeks, Going Fur Gold, Locked Up: Abroad, Top Ten: 80’s, and Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks Showdown are among the eliminated programs that fans are upset about.
But in the midst of the online protestations, the public relations department at Disney+ has been proactive in defending their position.
Disney+ Defends
Responding to the bevy of fan complaints, Disney+ officials stated that the titles that it is removing from its streaming platform only amount to less than 2% of their current titles.
“Like all media companies, we regularly review our titles and make assessments and content decisions based on what makes the most sense for the business.”
In their defense, the titles listed on September 29 only represent a drop in the bucket when compared to everything left on the platform, and their removal does open up the service for other titles that might be in more demand.
Canceled Elsewhere As Well
The move by Disney+ will affect more than just platform subscribers inside the continental United States. Examinations into the streaming libraries offered by the company in the United Kingdom and Australia have revealed that the same titles were axed, leading to the assumption that these removals are worldwide.
While it’s not uncommon for a streaming service to offer different programing in different global markets, this news has certainly made waves as no one market will be able to view these programs on their former platform.
The Spiderwick Chronicles And More Canceled
Adding to the fury is that Disney+ owns much of its removed content outright, making it unlikely that any of the platform’s original content will be available elsewhere.
The recent announcement by Disney+ does not mark the first time that subscribers have been angered by the streaming platform ridding itself of popular original content, movies, and television series.
In May of last year, Y: The Last Man, Willow, and Pistol were taken off streaming, followed by the shelving of Nautilus and The Spiderwick Chronicles. Two months after its 2023 debut, the Disney+ original film Crater was taken away from fans, leading to a similar echo of dissatisfaction from subscribers.
Also Raising Prices?
The news surrounding Disney+ canceling some of its popular content is swirling with rumors that the streaming platform is considering yet another subscription price hike for its service.
This rumor is coupled with another in which the company will be charging subscribers an additional fee for sharing the password for access outside of the original subscriber’s household.
