Daniel Day-Lewis Is Making An Acting Comeback Because Of His Kid
What did it take to get Daniel Day-Lewis out of acting retirement? His son. The great actor will return to the big screen in Focus Features and Plan B’s Anemone, which is directed by Ronan Day-Lewis. We thought we’d seen the last of Daniel Day-Lewis on the big screen, but thankfully it won’t be the case. Instead, it’s going to be a family affair this time around.
Daniel Day-Lewis In Anemone
The announcement Daniel Day-Lewis will return to acting came this week on the news that Anemone would hit the big screen in the coming years. The father-son Day-Lewis combo co-wrote the screenplay together, and the movie will be about the relationships between fathers, sons, brothers, and family.
From a synchronicity standpoint, it’s hard to imagine a better project for Daniel Day-Lewis to return with, clearly seeing the same through lines between what will happen on the big screen and what has happened in his own life.
In addition to Daniel Day-Lewis as the star and Ronan Day-Lewis behind the lens, Anemone will include Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green in various roles.
Phantom Thread Was His Last?
Daniel Day-Lewis previously announced his acting retirement following Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 film Phantom Thread.
That movie starred Day-Lewis as a dressmaker in 1950s London and explored the relationship between his characters and Vicky Krieps’s Alma Elson, who becomes his lover, muse, and ultimate downfall.
Like many other Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Thomas Anderson movies, it was met with overwhelming critical acclaim, scoring 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Plus, there were nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor among others.
Acting Too Much?
Following that film, Daniel Day-Lewis decided to retire, citing a relative need to step away from the practice totally.
He said his version of method acting took a toll on his wellbeing and questioned whether he believed in acting enough to continue on with it as a career. There was a sense from Daniel Day-Lewis that he needed to draw a firm line in his career path so as not to be drawn into new projects.
Knowing the toll some of these took on him over the years, it’s easy to see why he wanted a distinct boundary. But as with all things family, the boundary becomes less important, which looks to be the case with Anemone.
A Celebrated Career
Clearly, working with his son on Anemone has changed those feelings, a welcome sign for this overall frame of mind regarding acting. Getting him back into the acting mix means seeing one of the true greats once again.
Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the most accomplished actors to ever live, winning the Best Actor award for Lincoln, There Will Be Blood, and My Left Foot. He’s also been nominated for Gangs of New York and In the Name of the Father.
Daniel Day-Lewis Is Back
Whether this is just a one-off movie for Daniel Day-Lewis, or there is more to come remains to be seen. But it’s fantastic having one of the true greats back on the screen once again.
