The sudden departure of critically acclaimed screenwriter Steven Knight from the highly anticipated Daisy Ridley Star Wars project has thrown the production into limbo. The Peaky Blinders writer was announced to be crafting the upcoming production’s screenplay in March 2023 and promised fans a film that continues the storyline immediately following the conclusion of the 2019 movie Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Stephen Knight Departs The Film

The reason for Knight’s departure from the project after nearly two years isn’t yet known, but serves as the latest in a series of setbacks that could well push the movie’s release date until the end of 2025 at the earliest.

Daisy Ridley is set to reprise her role as Rey in the upcoming Star Wars film. The movie is said to focus on her opening a Jedi Academy.

Interestingly enough, Steven Knight was not the first screenwriter to be assigned to the Daisy Ridley Star Wars film. Writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were at one time penning the story for the project, but left in early 2023 and were replaced by Knight.

The Director Is Still On Board

The Daisy Ridley Star Wars film will still serve as the directorial debut for Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The filmmaker has dazzled fans on the small screen, having been at the helm of multiple episodes of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.

Obaid-Chinoy is the recipient of seven Emmy Awards and two Oscars, the latter honors for her work on the documentary short film Saving Face (2012) and the Best Documentary Short Subject A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (2016).

Steven Knight’s departure won’t find the screenwriter without a massive to-do list. With the Daisy Ridley Star Wars film off of his plate, Knight will be able to focus on the multitude of projects he has on the horizon, including the upcoming Angelina Jolie film Maria, the film adaptation of Peaky Blinders titled Immortal Man, and the Disney+ boxing drama A Thousand Blows.

The Mandalorian

This news could well mean that fans of the Star Wars universe will have to wait until May 2026 to get another dose of the franchise on theater screens. The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to be released then, ending a seven-year gap in feature films. That project is slated to be directed by Jon Favreau.

Instead of additional movies, Lucasfilm has turned to streaming services to give the large fanbase multiple TV series that further explore the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian, Andor, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi have helped to state the masses to a degree, though many will attest that there’s nothing more gratifying than seeing what’s next in the galaxy far, far away unfolding on a theater screen.

Fans are also buzzing about the franchise rumors that go well beyond anything to do with the Daisy Ridley movie. Star Wars projects that are believed to be in development are keeping the fan sites busy, with speculations swirling of Taika Waititi, Rian Johnson, Donald Glover, Patty Jenkins, and James Mangold being involved in directing various unnamed Star Wars productions.
