The Greatest Black Comedy Of All Time Shares Heartwarming Connection With Beloved Sitcom

The Clue icons were cast for guest appearances as Britta Perry’s (Gillian Jacobs) parents in the sixth and final season of Community. In the episode “Lawnmower Maintenance and Postnatal Care,” Britta discovers that her estranged parents secretly support her financially. When she goes to confront them about it at their house, she finds her roommates/friends hanging out with her parents. 

Martin Mull and Lesley Ann Warren reprised their role as Britta’s parents in a later Season 6 episode, “Advanced Safety Features.” In this episode, Britta sparks up yet another fling with a previous flame and goes to introduce him to her parents. The encounter goes over as awkwardly as you’d expect.

While Martin Mull’s character in Community is very much what I’d imagine Coronel Mustard from Clue would be like years after the murderous encounter if he settled down and had a family, Lesley Ann Warren’s gullible Mrs. Perry is nothing like what you’d expect a more mature Miss Scarlett to be like, especially if you go by the movie ending in which she was the murderer. 

Clue was a massive flop when it was released in 1985. The fast-talking slapstick comedy boasted a popular cast of celebrities but failed to earn back its budget. Today, the decision to release multiple endings in various movie theaters is believed to have confused audiences, who decided to skip it and wait for physical release. 

By the time Community was a beloved sitcom, Clue was already considered a cult classic. Seeing Coronel Mustard and Miss Scarlett together again in some capacity was a brilliant reminder of how well the actors played off each other decades ago in the board game-turned-movie.

Both Clue veterans remained very active in Hollywood after appearing in Community. Lesley Ann Warren continued making TV appearances in a plethora of shows. She’s had parts in series like Daredevil, Broke, and Dirty Diana. According to IMDb, the 78-year-old actress has 4 upcoming projects she’ll be a part of.

Martin Mull passed away at 80 on June 27, 2024, after also keeping extremely busy with his Hollywood appearances. With the Community movie set to film in 2025, we now know there’s no chance that Britta’s dad will pop up as a surprise cameo, but there’s still a chance we might get to see Miss Scarlett mourn the death of Coronel Mustard via Britta’s mom.
