Andrew Garfield Returning As Spider-Man?
When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Multiverse specifically, really anything is on the table for who can step in as a certain character or hero. We’ve seen as much over the years, especially so in Spider-Man: No Way Home when Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield all converged in some web-slinging awesomeness.
Apparently, at least one of those guys is eager to get back in the suit and start flying around New York City again. Andrew Garfield said he’d be up for the task if the right situation came along.
Andrew Garfield Would Return
Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Andrew Garfield was asked if he would return as Peter Parker at any point.
Garfield didn’t mix words about the situation saying, “For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into.”
Returning In Spider-Man: No Way Home
Of course, saying you wouldn’t mind returning to a role and actually returning to that role are completely separate things. That’s especially true in the world of comic books and superhero movies, where characters come and go rather quickly.
But Andrew Garfield’s initial return in Spider-Man: No Way Home at least lent some credence to the idea. Namely, he returned once, so why not once again?
A Great Return
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man versions were brought into Tom Holland’s timeline.
This happens after Holland’s Parker goes to Doctor Strange, looking for a solution to his own identity, which is revealed at the end of Far From Home.
But the spell goes haywire, and it instead pulls in a bunch of folks from other timelines who know Peter’s identity.
A Proper Sendoff
With that come Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in pretty special cameos that see the three Spider-Men teaming up for a last stand against all of the remaining villains.
Those cameos put something of a bow on both of the previous Spider-Man franchise stories and timelines. If Andrew Garfield never returned as the character, at least he got a proper sendoff.
Amazing Spider-Man
In that same interview, Andrew Garfield commented on the closure of No Way Home, considering his own version of the franchise was cut short after lackluster box office performances.
The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was in the works, but Sony pulled the plug, leaving that story unresolved following the death of Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy.
More Spider-Man
What form Spider-Man takes in the future remains to be seen. As of this writing, there was no confirmation of when the character would even return to the MCU.
There’s a chance after the events of No Way Home that we won’t even see Tom Holland again, though that would be tough to stomach. If anything, we see him way before Andrew Garfield ever steps back into the Spider-suit to sling webs all over the city.
