Amazon Is Bringing Jack Ryan To Theaters
While Greta Gerwig is fighting with Netflix to get Chronicles of Narnia into theaters, Amazon is sending its hit original series, Jack Ryan, to theaters. Series star John Krasinski returns as the titular CIA analyst, along with some of the supporting cast, the writer of Season 4, and the director of Season 2. The plot is under wraps, but it’s expected to follow up Season 4, and might even help expand the Clancyverse in a new direction.
Amazon Is Going Against The Current
Jack Ryan is one of Amazon’s most popular shows, coming in behind The Boys but in front of The Man in the High Castle on the all time list, which makes the move to theaters a surprising turn of events. Then again, Amazon’s been taking big swings lately, with Rings of Power claiming the title of most expensive series ever made, and the attempt to build a new blockbuster spy franchise with Citadel, but neither of those have hit the heights of Krasinksi’s unexpected hero.
When Jack Ryan arrives in theaters, it will be the fifth time that the character has been played on the big screen, following The Hunt for Red October with Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford’s pair of films in the 90s, Ben Affleck in Sum of All Fears, and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit with Chris Pine. John Krasinski has played the role for the longest, with his series lasting for four seasons, and a case could be made he’s the most successful of that all-star lineup. Even at its worse, it has a low bar to clear to surpass Shadow Recruit.
From Streaming Series To The Big Screen
Making the jump alongside John Krasinski to the big screen is Wendall Pierce as James Greer and Michael Kelly as CIA Agent Mike November. Behind the scenes, Jack Ryan is being written by Aaron Rabin, who wrote all but the third episode of Season 4, while Andrew Bernstein, director of the well-received second season, is in the director’s chair. The involvement of stars and talent from the streaming series makes it clear that Amazon wants this to be a continuation, and could it be the long-awaited stealth launch of the next phase of the Clancyverse?
The Growing Clancyverse
Acclaimed author Tom Clancy created Jack Ryan for his debut novel, The Hunt for Red October, igniting new interest in the military thriller genre and launching a new writing career that lasted until his death in 2013. Selling millions of copies, the Clancyverse soon included movies, spin-off novels, and even video games, but with both Jack Ryan and the Michael B. Jordan John Clark film Without Remorse now on the service, it’s time for Amazon to adapt one of Clancy’s best novels: Rainbow Six.
Could the upcoming Jack Ryan movie finally be the springboard for Michael Pena’s Rainbow Six series, following his introduction in Season 4 of the show? It could be, or it could just be a blockbuster goodbye to John Krasinski’s time as Jack Ryan, but even die-hard Clancy fans would prefer that the movie not go into Ryan’s time as President of the United States.
