Both the Alien franchise and the Predator franchise have had some rocky years of releasing movies that left fans underwhelmed at their quality. However, it is now looking like both franchises are back on track courtesy of the 2022 Predator prequel Prey, and currently with the latest Alien movie, Alien: Romulus. Evidently that success already has Romulus director Fede Alvarez taking a crack at a crossover between the franchises with a new Alien vs. Predator movie.

Alvarez Wants A Team-Up With Trachtenberg

Romulus director Fede Alvarez made it clear that he enjoyed making the film, and it now has him interested in possibly teaming up with the director behind Prey, Dan Tratchenberg, for a new Alien vs. Predator.

“Maybe it’s something I have to co-direct with my buddy Dan,” he said. “Maybe we should do like Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez did with Dusk till Dawn. I’ll direct a half, and he’ll direct another half.”

While the first Alien vs. Predator movie had some criticism about not making the most sense from the standpoint of the established lore surrounding both monster species, it did well at the box office. The sequel, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem got less favorable reactions and was the last attempt at on screen crossover between the monsters.

However, that last attempt was in 2007, and now with both franchises doing well again, another attempt at Alien vs. Predator could finally deliver the movie many fans have wanted. Especially if Alvarez and Tratchenberg collaborate. Both seem to have really enjoyed their work on the respective franchises and have sounded open to doing more.

Alien: Romulus

For Alvarez, his Alien: Romulus opened to a $40 million box office, making it not only one of the biggest movies of the summer, but also the second biggest opening for the franchise ever.

It will also be the biggest domestic opening for Alvarez so far. While many have felt the movie market has become oversaturated with shared universe films, Alien vs. Predator clearly has a lot of fans.

It Could Do Better Today

The first Alien vs. Predator movie made $177.4 million worldwide. With both franchises now arguably at a renewed peak in audience interest, a new crossover could probably stand a chance of breaking the original Alien vs. Predator’s box office total.

As for Alvarez’s point about collaborating like Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino did for From Dusk till Dawn, it is not something that happens often in movies, but Alvarez does have a good track record with his projects.

He also directed the 2013 version of Evil Dead, as well as the highly praised Don’t Breathe. So perhaps studios would feel confident in letting him do a joint movie for Alien vs. Predator.

It Would Be Good To Hear From Trachtenberg

For Dan Trachtenberg, he has a less extensive filmography, but what he has worked on has been well-received. He was the director behind the popular 10 Cloverfield Lane, as well as having done work on Black Mirror, The Boys, and the upcoming final season of Stranger Things. With Alvarez expressing interest in teaming up for Alien vs. Predator, it would be interesting to hear Trachtenberg’s thoughts on the idea as well.
