Absurd Heist Comedy With A-List Cast In Strangest Roles Tops Netflix
The redneck heist film Logan Lucky never had its moment in the sun when it was in theaters, but it quickly became a cult classic in the following years, and it manages to be a hit anytime it returns to streaming. That trend has continued as the film is once again on Netflix, and it has rapidly risen to the streaming service’s Top Ten. If you missed out on this underrated film before, now is a great time to check it out.
Channing Tatum As You’ve Never Seen Before
Logan Lucky is a sharply-written, fantastically cast, and well-directed film that follows family man Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum), his brother Clyde (Adam Driver), and his sister Melly (Riley Keough), as they team up to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.
The team also seeks the help of demolition expert Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) to pull off the daring heist, though things go awry when they accidentally attempt to steal the money during a huge NASCAR race. On top of that, an FBI agent (Hilary Swank) is also on their tails.
Take Me Home, Country Roads
If you’ve been looking for a high-octane heist movie to fill the Oceans 11-sized hole in your heart, then Logan Lucky is the perfect film to do it. This makes sense because it’s directed by Oceans filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, who brings his veteran heist movie sensibilities to give us a decidedly different take on the genre. Where the Oceans franchise is slick, this movie shows us dimwitted hicks pulling together a heist from scraps and sheer fortitude.
A Stacked Cast From Top To Bottom
Of course, another highlight of Logan Lucky is the cast, which Soderbergh movies always seem to nail. Along with Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Riley Keough, Daniel Craig, and Hilary Swank, the movie gives us the talents of Katie Holmes, Katherine Waterston, Sebastian Stan, Seth MacFarlane, and more. Somehow, the movie only managed to get $48 million at the box office when it was released.
An Unlucky Box Office Run
Logan Lucky’s unlucky run at the box office could be partially attributed to a lack of marketing, as this film brought Steven Soderbergh out of retirement, and he distributed it independently through his own company. While it was an admirable effort, it just failed to make a splash when it was released. Fortunately, the fantastic reviews helped to bolster its profile, and it’s been a pretty big hit on streaming ever since.
Daniel Craig Is Unhinged On Netflix
REVIEW SCORE
While the entire cast is great in Logan Lucky, special praise has to be given to Daniel Craig, who has an absolute blast as Joe Bang amidst his years playing James Bond. Rather than seeing Craig as the suave spy we normally see on screen, we get to see him play a crazy demolitions expert with a Southern accent. Craig has since taken on another equally fun role as a southern-accented character in the Knives Out franchise, but Bang is a decidedly more unhinged character that steals every scene he’s in.
In short, if you like heist films, then you should definitely check out Logan Lucky. You’ll quickly see why it climbs to the Top Ten just about every time it’s on Netflix. You can stream it on Netflix now.
