On October 19, a Walmart employee in Halifax, Nova Scotia was found dead inside a large walk-in bakery oven that was located inside the store. According to a fundraiser organized by the Maritime Sikh Society, working on behalf of the victim’s family, the employee has been identified as 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur. The victim’s body was discovered by her mother, who had worked at the same Walmart for the last two years beside her daughter.

An Investigation Is Ongoing

Halifax Regional Police said they were called to the Walmart at 6990 Mumford Road in Halifax, Nova Scotia at 9:30 p.m. after receiving the call reporting the discovery of Kaur’s body. Following the incident that left the Walmart employee dead, the Walmart store has since been closed until further notice while police undergo their investigation, a Walmart spokesperson said.

“We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family,” Walmart spokesperson Amanda Moss said in a statement, revealing that employees have been offered on-site support, including grief counseling, as well as access to virtual care. “Our focus remains on taking care of our associates and making sure they have the support they need.”

On October 22, the Halifax Regional Police offered little information on what caused the incident that left Kaur, an experienced Walmart employee, dead. “The woman, who was an employee of the store, was located in a large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s bakery department,” the Halifax Regional Police said in an update on Tuesday.

In the update, authorities urged the public to be mindful of creating and sharing speculative information on the cause of Kaur’s death, especially on social media, citing the well-being of the victim’s family and friends.

According to Halifax Regional Police officials, the investigation into Kaur’s death will be as lengthy as it is “complex,” involving the cooperation of several partner agencies. While police say that determining the exact cause of death and the circumstances that led Kaur inside the walk-in bakery will be a lengthy process, representatives of the victim’s family have already been hard at work raising awareness of the incident.

Mother Was The One Who Discovered Her Remains

In a GoFundMe created by the Maritime Sikh Society on behalf of Kaur’s family, the aftermath of the incident that left the Walmart employee dead was described in shocking detail. “As you all know now, her charred remains were found inside the walk in oven in the Bakery after a few hours,” the fundraiser’s description reads. “Imagine the horror that her mother experienced who herself opened the oven, when someone pointed out to it!”

According to the fundraiser’s description, Kaur’s mother, whose name has not been disclosed, realized that something was wrong when her daughter seemingly went missing after an hour of no contact. While Kaur has been described as someone who is known to turn their phone off during the workday, her mother frantically began to search for her daughter. After consulting her fellow Walmart employees and then the store’s management, Kaur’s mother found her daughter’s dead body inside the oven.

Donations Pour In

After initially setting a fundraising goal of $50,000 to cover the cost of Kaur’s funeral, a Maritime Sikh Society executive says that their target has been reached thanks to the “kindness and generosity” of the donations. As of October 24, over 3,700 people have donated to the GoFundMe, resulting in over $136,000, which has been pledged to go directly to Kaur’s family. According to the organizer of the fundraiser, they are currently seeking to close donations after nearly tripling their goal in under 24 hours.
