The Tupac Shakur Interview That Tried To Warn Us About Diddy 30 Years Ago

By Jonathan Klotz | Published

Tupac Shakur was a singular talent, a gifted performer who rose up from nothing to become a legend whose life was tragically cut short, and for decades, fans and people involved in the feud with Notorious B.I.G. have pointed the finger at Sean “Diddy” Combs as the mastermind behind his murder. In 1995, Tupac gave an interview to Vibe magazine, which has been preserved thanks to 2paclegacy.net, that gives details about an earlier shooting and how, again, Diddy was not only involved but even Shakur thought he was the one calling the shots.

The Infamous 1994 Shooting

Journalist Kevin Powell visited Tupac Shakur during his stay on Riker’s Island following his conviction for sexual assault and covered not only the trial but also when Shakur was shot in 1994 on his way into Quad Recording Studios and how Diddy was involved. The Grammy award-winning rap legend explained he was on the way to get payment for a guest spot when his group walked into an ambush. While no one’s stories line up perfectly, which makes sense for a confusing, traumatic event, the result isn’t in doubt: Tupac was shot multiple times and was lucky to be alive.

Diddy Was There

What makes this suspect is that, as Tupac Shakur explained, the meeting was arranged by one of Diddy’s crew, and right after the shooting, his group went up the elevator to get away, got off, and everyone was surprised to see him. According to Pac, Diddy was there that night, explaining, “Puffy was standing back too. I knew Puffy. He knew how much stuff I had done for Biggie before he came out.” So one of Sean Combs’s boys arranges a meeting and tells Shakur where to go and when to be there, which happens to lead the crew into an ambush, and then, everyone is surprised when he turns up alive.

That’s incredibly suspicious and helps explain how far the beef was going to go in the next few years.

Diddy’s Diss

Tupac Shakur’s suspicions that Diddy was involved in the Quad Recording shooting were essentially confirmed when, as Puff Daddy back then, he dropped the Notorious B.I.G. diss track “Who Shot Ya?” in what was then considered to be a taunt directed at Shakur. The single would get a wide release later on one of Biggie’s albums, but the initial mixtape hit the scene right after the shooting and might as well have been Diddy holding up a neon sign pointing to himself. Yet, he’s denied having any involvement.

Other Rappers Believe Tupac

Later in 1995, after the interview was recorded in January, Tupac Shakur was visited by Diddy, with the rap mogul reassuring Pac that he wasn’t involved in the shooting. There’s been no hard evidence linking him, or Bad Boy Records, to the shooting either, despite Shakur’s belief that it was a setup. He wasn’t the only one who would think Diddy was involved, as thanks to capturing his own words in the Vibe interview, future rappers would go on to accuse Diddy of taking hits out on Tupac.

Most notably, this includes Eminem, who, as usual, doesn’t play coy and comes out and says it in the track “Fuel – Shady Version:” “Notorious B.I.G.’s death was the domino effects of Tupac’s murder / Like facial tissue, whose card should I clean next? Puff’s? ‘Til he’s in police handcuffs, guilty, will he step up? / Like gee, never turned himself in, who knows all the murders there’ll have been.”

We Were Warned

Tupac Shakur told the world through the famous Vibe magazine interview who Diddy really was. Yet, a few years later, the Bad Boy Records founder would be up on stage, butchering one of Sting’s greatest songs as a tribute to Notorious B.I.G. Today, the mask is finally off.

The world has seen that Diddy, now in jail after having been denied bail for a whole slew of horrendous crimes, was the head of a criminal organization. We were warned, but instead of listening to Tupac Shakur, the legendary warrior-poet who changed the world, Hollywood and mainstream media embraced the slick Diddy. It took a few decades, but Tupac was right, and now, as Katt Williams foretold, he’s finally getting the last laugh.
