Vision Quest

Marvel's Vision Quest

He was called the most powerful Avenger when he was introduced to the MCU in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, but since then he’s rarely gotten a chance in the spotlight. That’s about to change.

Paul Bettany is getting his own spinoff/sequel series to Disney+’s very first Marvel show, WandaVision, in the form of Vision Quest.

Vision Quest Is In Development

It was Deadline who broke the news that Vision Quest was on the way.

Like the other WandaVision spinoff, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Bettany’s series is overseen by Jac Shaeffer who created and executive-produced WandaVision.

Eileen Shim (House of the Dragon) was identified as one of the writers for the series, thanks to a posting on the Writers Guild of America site.

Vision Pursues His Memory And Humanity

Vision Quest will see the titular synthezoid recovering from the events of both 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and WandaVision.

Vision dies not once but twice in Infinity War. In WandaVision, S.W.O.R.D. reanimates his body — minus his memory — and sends this new White Vision after Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen).

The White Vision battles the version Wanda created to a standstill. He eventually relents and leaves the fight, not because he is overpowered but because the other Vision convinces him there is more to his existence than what S.W.O.R.D. demands of him. Declaring, “I am Vision,” he takes flight and leaves Westview, and so far has not been seen again in the MCU.

Vision Quest will pick up with Bettany’s character where he was left in WandaVision, with the synthezoid needing to rediscover himself.

Vision Quest Shooting In 2024

If everything goes as planned, Paul Bettany and co. could be shooting Vision Quest by the end of 2024.

Back in February, Charles Murphy (via ComicBookMovie) reported that the series would begin filming by “next year.” However, there are a couple of reasons to take this news with the proverbial grain of salt.

First, the report was never confirmed. Second, even if we assume it’s accurate that Vision Quest was scheduled to begin filming in 2024, that was before the joint WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

The strikes ground everything in Hollywood to a halt, and it would be genuinely shocking to learn Vision Quest was any kind of exception.

Elizabeth Olsen Could Return For Vision Quest

In spite of her character’s death in last year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, word from several sources indicates Elizabeth Olsen could be returning to the role of Wanda Maximoff for Vision Quest. Deadline’s initial report on the series raised the possibility.

Also, the same report that claimed the series would film next year stated the show would include “Vision-related characters,” and the list of such characters is kind of short.

Connections To Wonder Man?

Yahya Abdul Mateen II

While there’s been no indication so far that this will remain the same in the MCU, in the source material the lives of Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Wonder Man are tied closely together. In fact, in the comics, we eventually learn it was Wonder Man’s brainwaves that Ultron used to help create Vision.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Wonder Man series was one of many projects whose filming reportedly had to stop because of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. Considering the initially planned production dates of Wonder Man and Vision Quest, it’s tempting to speculate that there will be a connection between the two.

The Cast Of Vision Quest

So far, the only cast member confirmed for Vision Quest is Paul Bettany as the titular synthezoid. Beyond him, we can only speculate.

If it’s true Vision Quest will star “Vision-related characters,” then as previously mentioned, it’s possible the series could feature Elizabeth Olsen and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

It’s also not out of the realm of possibility we could see James Spader and Mark Ruffalo reprise their Marvel roles, since both Ultron and Bruce Banner were among those responsible for Vision’s creation in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Then there’s someone we haven’t seen in quite a long time: Claudia Kim as Dr. Helen Cho. In Age of Ultron, the titular AI takes Dr. Cho hostage and uses her to help make Vision’s body — a body he means to take for himself. Cho could be someone Vision might seek out to “rediscover” himself.

While it’s only speculation, this could be particularly meaningful for the larger MCU if both Kim and Ruffalo showed up in Vision Quest. In the source material Dr. Cho has a son named Amadeus who has close ties with the Hulk, eventually becoming a Hulk himself.

Vision Quest’s Premiere Date

No official release date for Vision Quest has been announced, and between that and the ongoing strikes, even making an educated guess seems plain foolish.

We might be able to look forward to Vision Quest sometime in 2026.

Questions Vision Quest Needs To Answer

Along with the obvious (i.e. will Vision regain his memory), there are a lot of questions left over from WandaVision that fans will be looking to Vision Quest to answer.

The first question: How did S.W.O.R.D. revive Vision in the first place? Even before he was killed twice in Infinity War, the synthezoid’s life was possible only because of the Mind Stone.

The Mind Stone is long gone, meaning that somehow S.W.O.R.D. had to figure out a way to replicate — or circumvent the need for — the energy of one of the most powerful artifacts in the universe. Explaining how they managed that needs more than “we scienced it.”

The second question: Is it even possible that Vision is the same person since his death? As Bruce Banner explains in Infinity War, the synthezoid was an amalgam of himself, Tony Stark, Ultron, J.A.R.V.I.S., and the Mind Stone.

With the Mind Stone that was once attached to him destroyed, is everything that made up the Vision — personality wise and physically — essentially “Vision Minus Mind Stone,” or has he somehow retained the artifact’s power and persona?

Third question: Is there still a place for Vision in the Avengers? Clearly the cast of Vision Quest probably won’t be inflated by everyone from the team, but that doesn’t mean the question won’t come up.

Fourth and finally: Will Vision know about Wanda’s actions and her fate in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and, if so, how will he react?
