What does The Mandalorian season 4 have in store? As season 3 of The Mandalorian delivered its penultimate episode, unhappy fans are still asking the question as to whose show it is. As was seen in The Book of Boba Fett when Mando himself swept in and made the series The Mandalorian 2.5, we are seeing the same thing as Din Djarin has taken a back seat to Bo-Katan Kryze.

With all that said, with all the focus moving away from Din Djarin, there is one bright spot from season 3 – we will see The Mandalorian Season 4. Here is what we know about it.

THE MANDALORIAN SEASON 4 HAS ALREADY BEEN WRITTEN

According to The Mandalorian creator, Jon Favreau, season 4 has already been written. In fact, The Mandalorian season 4 was being written by Favreau as Season 3 was in post-production.

Favreau, while talking about season 4, wanted to stress that the scripts had to be written in a way that the story could fit within the Star Wars universe and that it can align with some of the upcoming new Star Wars series.

“Season 4, yeah I’ve written it already,” Favreau said. “We have to know where we’re going to tell a fully formed story. We had mapped it out, Dave [Filoni] and I, and slowly you start to write each episode. I was writing it during post-production. All of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”

“[Dave’s] doing ‘Ahsoka’,” Favreau continued via Variety, “which I’m producing with him. He’s the writer and showrunner on that. To understand what’s happening on other shows… ‘Skeleton Crew’ all take place within the same ‘Star Wars’ time period. There’s a lot more things that we’ve got to keep in mind and also stuff that we’ve built up to from previous seasons of ‘The Mandalorian’ as well.”

It’s important to note the two new series that Favreau mentioned, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. Seeing as how those two shows line up with The Mandalorian season 4 timeline, the three are said to culminate in one large “titanic event.” What this event is has been a question Favreau and his Star Wars partner-in-crime, Dave Filoni, have yet to reveal.

What we do know is that Rosario Dawson will be reprising her role as Ahsoka Tano in Ahsoka (premiering in August 2023), Jude Law will be leading the way in Skelton Crew, and a third new series, The Acolyte, is also on its way from creator Leslye Headland, but it is not yet known if this one will be part of the “titanic event.”

PEDRO PASCAL WILL RETURN FOR THE MANDALORIAN SEASON

All signs point to a yes when it comes to Pedro Pascal returning for The Mandalorian season 4. But fans have been not too thrilled as it has pertained to Mando’s season 3 adventures, one that series director, Rick Famuyiwa addressed recently. In an interview with IGN, the director spoke about not only who The Mandalorian is, but why, perhaps, the title isn’t necessarily just referring to Din Djarin.

“I think that’s been interesting as we’ve been on the journey of the show, and now that we’re at this point, is that, what does that title mean?” Famuyiwa was referring to an earlier The Mandalorian season 3 episode where Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) takes the spotlight as Mando is relegated to the back seat after he gives her the Darksaber.

“Who is the Mandalorian at this point? And so I think it could be anyone,” he concluded. “And I think that’s what they’re trying to define in many ways, is what does that mean to be Mandalorian?”

Unfortunately, it is the pivoting away from the main character that had fans in an uproar when it happened to Boba Fett on his own show, and it appears to be happening in season 3 of The Mandalorian. It makes us wonder just what The Mandalorian season 4 has in store for our favorite duo of Din Djarin and Grogu.

THERE IS A LOT UP IN THE AIR FOR THE MANDALORIAN SEASON 4

The Mandalorian season 4

As we reach the final episode of The Mandalorian Season 3 (airing on April 19, 2023), there is no clear direction as to the direction the series may take in Season 4. With Bo-Katan taking much of the limelight, chances are Sackhoff will return in Season 4 along with Pascal’s Mando and Grogu.

Carl Weathers should also be making a return as Greef Karga unless something unexpected happens in the final episode of season 3 and with Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon back in action, don’t be surprised to see him survive and make it to season 4.

Other than those few, no one is talking. As Ahsoka, Skelton Crew, and The Acolyte ramp up, any number of these characters could see a cross over onto The Mandalorian season 4. And don’t forget, there are still a number of Filoni-created characters that have yet to make their appearance.

“Very rarely [I think ‘How can I get my cartoon characters into live-action?’],” Filoni said in an interview with The Wrap. “I know people think it’s the other way around, which is fascinating to me, but I think there’s two ways to look at that, which is that, yes, they were animated characters, but to me, they’re just characters. And now I’m over here working in live-action. I’m comfortable with those characters, I know them, I like them and I like to see them around.”

Filoni then pointed out that was how Cad Bane (from Filoni’s The Clone Wars) was brought into The Book of Boba Fett when it was necessary to have another antagonist. He said, moving forward, that the process of bringing in some of his animated characters into live-action stories, especially with Ahsoka, will continue.

“When we needed a gunslinger to go up against some of our characters in Book of Boba Fett, Cad Bane’s name came up. I think looking at that, the first thing I think is, ‘Well, how do we do that and make it believable?’ Like the character, he’s so lean and gaunt in The Clone Wars. And if we don’t do that, is it all CG? How are we going to portray that? If we don’t think we can do that effectively, then we shouldn’t do it.

“At the end of the day, I’ve been very happy with the ones that have gone over. There may or may not be more in Ahsoka, if that’s your thing. If you’re excited about that, I’m just saying that one might have a few more, which makes sense, by the way. As you know, I wrote it. You can’t fault me there.”

How this will affect The Mandalorian season 4 remains to be seen.

THE MANDALORIAN SEASON 4 WILL LEAD TO A “TITANIC EVENT”

While Favreau and Filoni aren’t dropping any hints at what season 4 of The Mandalorian will look like, they are also being very stubborn about this “titanic event.” There is a lot of speculation as to what the “titanic event” will look like. At least we know, per Filoni, that it still is going to happen. “I think that the reality of there being a big event in this time period is very real, is all I would say to that.”

Could we see a possible titanic event to the likes of the Heir to the Empire storyline from the Timothy Zahn novels of the 1990s? With Grand Admiral Thrawn being brought back to Ahsoka to give her fits, it’s a possibility. True, those stories followed Luke, Leia, and Han post-Return of the Jedi and had them face off against the last of the Imperial Forces, but Thrawn was a major point of contention, so maybe that is a direction Filoni and Favreau go.

Of course, the protagonists would have to change a bit, but The Mandalorian has already been hinting around the fact that the Outer Rim has some remnants of Empire still living there, and Filoni has said a number of times he is a huge fan of Zahn’s novels. It will be interesting to see where Favreau and Filoni take The Mandalorian season 4 and just how it will set up this “titanic event.” Stay tuned.
