The Boys Gen V
When The Boys first hit Amazon Prime Video in July 2019, it was met with high expectations, and it didn’t take long for the series to deliver. The series quickly hit on all the notes that The Boys comic book creators, Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson delivered when they introduced The Boys back in 2006. The series has been such a hit that it has produced a number of spin-offs – the web series Seven on 7, the animated anthology series, Diabolical, and the latest, The Boys Gen V.
Let’s take a look at everything we know about The Boys Gen V, a spinoff that looks to carry over all of the gore and mayhem of the original show with a new spin on the characters.
THIS STORY AND GROUP OF CHARACTERS WERE FIRST INTRODUCED IN THE COMIC BOOKS
Some of you may be saying to yourself, who the heck is Gen V? Well, if you find yourself asking this question, then perhaps you didn’t read the Garth Ennis comic book as closely as you should have. The story of Gen V was introduced in The Boys comic book and its story arc called “We Gotta Go Now.”
This story arc was the seventh in the comic book series, which the original had 72 issues, and it was also the three companion-piece six-issue mini-series run of Ennis and Robertson’s The Boys. “We Gotta Go Now” is also the name of the fourth trade paperback collection of The Boys.
THE BOYS GEN V IS DESCRIBED AS THE HUNGER GAMES AT COLLEGE
How’s this for a plot? It’s The Hunger Games with a The Boys twist to it. The Boys Gen V is set in the hallowed halls of Godolkin University, or God U, which is the one and only school in America that is exclusive to supes. So, instead of fans getting a look at the glitz and glam and terror and blood of Vought Industries, fans now get to follow the younger generation of supes as they prepare to rise to the top at God U, with the ultimate goal of becoming one of the Seven.
As the series is set to run (hopefully) concurrently with Season 4 of The Boys, the first season of The Boys Gen V will lean heavily on the events from The Boys Season 3. Vernon Sanders, the Head of Television for Amazon Prime, explained to Collider his take on Gen V:
“The young ensemble [is] fantastic. We have connections to The Boys universe and cast sort of peppered carefully throughout the season. So there are lots of Easter eggs that I think fans will love. And it’s a great combination of social commentary, blood, there’s lots of blood, a really cool mystery. And I think people will be surprised as they come into the show, and the show evolves, the implications that Gen V has on The Boys. The two shows have some really interesting connections. So I’m probably saying more than I should, but I’m really excited. We’re thrilled with the results.”
While the series is a spin-off of The Boys, Sanders also says the new series will not be completely similar in tone. “I’m so excited for people to see this show. I think what we were hoping for is a show that really felt like its own thing, but also felt like it was true to the universe that Eric [Kripke] and Seth [Rogen], and Evan [Goldberg] have created. And it really delivers.”
The one thing the new series will not be lacking in is blood and gore, and most likely some sex and nudity as well. Fans got their very first peek at The Boys Gen V with the teaser trailer that was recently released. You can see it below.
JAZ SINCLAIR, LIZZE BROADWAY, AND OTHERS ARE STARRING IN THE BOYS GEN V
The Boys Gen V has a few recognizable names in the cast. While many have not had their characters’ names or their superpowers divulged, we do know some. These include:
Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau. This 17-year-old’s superpower is that she can manipulate the veins and arteries in her body to where she can project them from her wrists. She does this so she can grab onto things or even people.
Lizze Broadway as Emma Shaw. Broadway is known for films such as the TV movie remake of The Lost Boys and the latest addition to the American Pie franchise, American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules. It is unknown, at this moment, what superpowers Emma Shaw possesses.
Sean Patrick Thomas as Polarity. There isn’t much known about Polarity at the moment but what is known is that Polarity is a former B-grade supe who has been given a statue in front of God U.
Clancy Brown as John Godolkin. Brown plays the founder of God U but it is unknown if he will have a superpower of his own or not.
Patrick Schwarzenegger as Golden Boy, a top prospect to end up on top at God U, as he has been given thermonuclear power to go along with his pure charisma. If the last name looks familiar, it should, as Patrick is most definitely the son of action hero legend and former California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Marco Pigossi as Doctor Edison Cardoza. Who and what the Doctor is all about is unknown.
There are others in the cast whose character names and powers have yet to be revealed. They are Jason Ritter, Chance Perdomo, London Thor, Shelley Conn, Derek Luh, and Asa Germann.
SOME CHARACTERS FROM THE BOYS WILL BE CROSSING OVER TO GEN V
Of course, you can’t have a spin-off of The Boys and not have some of The Boys cast cross on over to help usher in the new series. The Boys Gen V, as you may have seen in the teaser trailer, will also bring along Jessie T. Usher as A-Train, Colby Minifie as Ashley Barrett, and P.J. Byrne as Adam Bourke.
Now, how long they appear in The Boys Gen V is anyone’s guess, and don’t be surprised if, at some point, other stars from The Boys pop up on Gen V.
MICHELE FAZEKAS IS HELMING THE BOYS GEN V
Good news comes early for those behind The Boys Gen V. Even before the first episode has aired, a second season is already in the works. Apparently, Amazon Prime is so happy with the unaired first season that they have already ordered a second.
The first season of Gen V was put together by producer and co-showrunner, Michele Fazekas, along with her longtime writing partner Tara Butters. It is said, though, that as the Season 2 writing room is being put together, only Fazekas is moving forward with it.
Apparently, Butters has decided to take some time off to handle some family matters, though she is expected to rejoin The Boys Gen V if a third season is greenlit.
THE BOYS GEN V WILL PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 29, 2023
Producers of The Boys Gen V appear to be having some fun with maybe or maybe not announcing the exact premiere date of the spin-off series. The new year brought an unexpected Twitter post from the official Gen V Twitter account that claimed their favorite numbers were “2023.”
Immediately after that, the Gen V account ran with, “Other than the Seven! Other than the Seven.” Finally, those comedians at Gen V decided to post, “Premiere will be sometime between now [Jan 1, 2023] and Dec 31!!!”
At the 2023 San Diego Comic Con it was officially announced that The Boys’ Gen V will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 29, 2023.
Granted, that doesn’t give fans much to go on, but there is a theory. That theory is based on the follow-up tweet that Gen V posted, “Other than the Seven! Other than the Seven.” This theory presumes that the first seven is the month, which would be July, and the second number is the day, which would tell fans that The Boys Gen V series will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 7, 2023.
Is this date possible? Absolutely. This year, July 7 happens to fall on a Friday, which also happens to be the same day of the week that Amazon Prime releases new episodes of The Boys and any other major new show they wish to introduce.
When Season 3 of The Boys premiered in the summer of 2022, it did so to fantastic numbers, which may be why a July 7 date could be a lock. So, if this does appear to be the case, then fans might also be able to expect a first three-episode drop for The Boys Gen V, as has been seen with The Boys.
We may be trying too hard here and looking for something that we are only hoping for, but once we get further word on the exact premiere date, we will be sure to pass it along.
