Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Shazam! Fury of the Gods was the next installment in this franchise and brought back Zachary Levi in the lead role.
DC’s Shazam! was a critical hit in 2018, though it didn’t rake in the big bucks as hoped, pulling in close to $370 million worldwide. That mark ranks Shazam! as the lowest box office number for DC superheroes. But despite this, plans were always in motion for a sequel, box office be damned. Okay, perhaps if the box office truly tanked Warner Brothers Discovery could have had second thoughts, but the numbers were respectful enough for them to move forward with Shazam! 2 and finally give it an official name.
SHAZAM! 2 BECAME SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS
Shazam! 2 has a title and it isn’t Shazam! 2. They’re officially calling it Shazam! Fury Of The Gods. Here it is on the movie’s first poster…
The title was first announced by the movie’s director in this tweet…
Before unveiling that official title for Shazam! 2, the movie’s director briefly posted this joke title.
The Coronavirus has massively delayed the movie and the title is the Shazam! 2 crew taking potshots at themselves for how long this is taking to get done.
SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS RELEASED ON MARCH 17, 2023
In March 2022, while DC movie fans were delivered a whole bunch of bad news, Shazam! 2 Fury of the Gods was one of the few slivers of good news. As reported by Deadline, Warner Bros. announced the release dates for many of its high-profile 2022 films had been pushed back. The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were both delayed to 2023.
Now, with all the trouble The Flash star Ezra Miller has continued to find, the that movie’s June 23, 2023 date may be in jeopardy. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom appears to be set for a 2023 Christmas Day release. The release of Black Adam was pushed back from July 2022 to October 21, 2022, and DC League of Super-Pets was delayed from May 2022 to July 29, 2022.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods path to its theatrical release has been a bumpy one, to say the least. Stick with us here on this. The film was originally given an April 1, 2022, but that Fool’s Day turned into a joke as it was then moved to November 4, 2022.
That too ended up not being true as Warner Bros. shifted the date again, moving the film to June 2, 2023. Not satisfied with that, Warner Bros. made the smart move and pushed up the release date by bringing the film into the “Christmas corridor” and setting the new date for December 16, 2022.
Then it was moved for a five-day later release, December 21, 2022. Apparently, the Christmas holiday would not be a good time for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, so Warner Bros. moved it to March 17, 2023. This date appears to be set in stone. We think.
SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS RETURNS ZACHARY LEVI
One person we know is without a doubt returning to Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the hero himself, Zachary Levi. His joy around the first movie has carried into thoughts of the sequel and what it means to him to be able to bring a second Shazam! to fans.
As he explained to Entertainment Tonight, Zachary Levi’s goal is to simply bring “joy” to audiences around the world. He says, “I think one of the coolest things about the movie Shazam!… it brought people joy. It legitimately brought people joy. If that’s all I ever do in this world, I will be so grateful and so stoked.”
Asher Angel will also be back as Billy Batson in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Also returning are Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, and Ian Chen as Eugene Choi. While Djimon Hounsou’s return as The Wizard Shazam was in question since his unfortunate ending in the first film, you will be pleased to know Hounsou is back.
If you recall, Billy’s foster family also has their superhero alter-egos. Expect them to be part of Shazam! Fury of the Gods too. They are Adam Brody (Freddy), Meagan Good (Darla), Ross Butler (Eugene), Michelle Borth (Mary), and DJ Cotrona (Pedro).
In fact, Borth told Parade that they signed a five-picture deal and to expect more of her teenage version. “If we do do the sequel, you’re going to see more of the teenage part of her that we don’t really see in the first one,” she said.
Of course, while everyone expected to see Michelle Borth take up her role as Mary in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, including the actress herself based on what she said in the interview from Parade above, that’s apparently not happening. The film’s marketing team decided to share the below photo of the cast.
This photo should have Michelle Borth as Mary, but instead, it has Grace Fulton. What gives? Apparently, Grace Fulton will be taking on both the adult and teen versions of Mary in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Director David F. Sandberg confirmed this via Twitter.
However, no one has said why Michelle Borth was replaced. The actress clearly expected to be in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and so did the fans. The most logical explanation is that Borth, as Mary, was the oldest “kid” and now as a young adult, she no longer needs to change from child to adult superhero.
DAVID F. SANBERG IS BACK DIRECTING
The successful production of the first Shazam! has allowed the main behind-the-scenes players to return. Henry Gayden is returning to write the film and Peter Safran will be back to produce.
This also means that David F. Sandberg is back in the director’s chair for Shazam! Fury of the Gods. He confirmed that not only is he directing the movie but that he’ll be getting to work on it soon while answering fan questions on Twitter. There Sandberg revealed: “Shazam 2 is the next thing I’m directing (pending the continued existence of the world).”
All good news, so expect the sequel to keep its tone light and humor continuing.
HELEN MIRREN HAS BEEN CAST AS HESPERA
The big addition though is Helen Mirren as Hespera. She’s a central villain in the movie and she looks awesome.
At Hespera’s side will be Lucy Liu as the villain Kalypso…
It was thought that Mark Strong’s Dr. Sivana would be making an appearance because if you recall in the mid-credits scene from Shazam!, Dr. Sivana was paid a visit by Mister Mind. Naturally, it was assumed the two would be joining evil forces to take on the Shazam! family. That does not appear to be the case now.
One more new addition to the cast is Rachel Zegler (West Side Story). While her character had been kept under wraps, Helen Mirren accidentally let it slip that Zegler, in fact, will be playing another goddess, Anthea, sister to Mirren’s Hespera and Liu’s Kalypso.
BLACK ADAM IS NOT IN SHAZAM! 2
The question fans want to be answered is: Will Black Adam be part of Shazam! Fury of the Gods? We already know Black Adam, who will be played by Dwayne Johnson, is gearing up for his stand-alone movie.
The filmmakers are being annoyingly coy about Black Adam’s presence in the sequel though Levi doesn’t think Black Adam will have a presence in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. “I can say that as far as I know, Black Adam is not going to be in the second Shazam! because the idea is that they want to go and do a standalone Black Adam movie first,” he explained at the CCXP Cologne Convention (via ScreenRant).
So look for Black Adam and Shazam (they aren’t calling him Captain Marvel anymore) to cross paths in a third Shazam! movie because yes, that is also planned.
SUPERMAN COULD APPEAR IN SHAZAM! 2
No word yet if Superman will make another appearance in the new Shazam! film. Plans for the first movie were to show more than just Superman from the shoulders down but Henry Cavill was unavailable at the time of filming.
Now though, Warner Bros. has closed a deal with Henry Cavill to appear as Superman in cameo roles for some of their other movies. It is thought that deal likely includes some sort of appearance in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
SHAZAM! 2 WILL HAVE BILLY BATSON UPSETTING THE GODS
Shazam! and his family look to have their work cut out for them. While exact details are not known, it appears that the daughters of Atlas are not pleased that Billy Batson was given “the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury.” They arrive to wreak some havoc and exact some revenge.
THE SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS TRAILER
Our first-ever look at Shazam! Fury of the Gods came during DC Fandome, when they revealed finished footage from the movie. Here it is…
More recently, though, Warner Bros. dropped the full trailer for the Shazam! sequel. As with the first film, the sense of humor remains. There are some wonderful set pieces and great action can be seen in the trailer.
You get to see Helen Mirren in action and you also get to see the Shazam! family with their new look. Plus, if you look carefully, you will also see Annabelle, the horror doll. If you were not aware, Shazam! Fury of the Gods director, David F. Sandberg, also directed the horror film Annabelle: Creation.
In the trailer, Sandberg gives a little nod to that film and the doll can be seen sitting at the table with a bunch of other toys when Shazam’s doctor claims, “You understand, I’m a pediatrician.” Check out the full trailer below and get ready for Shazam! Fury of the Gods to lightning bolt its way into theaters on March 17, 2023.
