Author Lee Child has become a staple of the book community with his popular Jack Reacher series. The novels have been turned into feature films starring Tom Cruise, and a television show is currently available on Prime Video. The television series stars Alan Ritchson as the titular Jack Reacher, and the show was renewed for Season 2 almost immediately after the first season started airing episodes last year.
What makes the Prime Video version of Reacher so different from the movie adaptations of the Jack Reacher franchise is the fact that actor Alan Ritchson fits the bill as the tall authority figure. Reacher is built from the premise that Jack Reacher is a former U.S. Army policeman caught up in a conspiracy involving corruption and fellow police officers. He has a strong sense of self and justice for those wronged, leading him down dangerous paths.
The first season of Reacher was enjoyed by critics and audiences alike. Rotten Tomatoes currently ranks the series with a Tomatometer score of 92 percent and an Average Audience Score of 91 percent. Reacher Season 2 promises some outlandish storylines and more tangled webs of deceit.
Here is everything we know about Reacher Season 2.
REACHER SEASON 2 WILL PREMIERE IN 2023
Reacher initially debuted on Prime Video in February 2022 and was quickly renewed for Season 2 a few days after its premiere on the streamer. Prime Video has seen great success in the last couple of years with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and the winding down of its staple series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Filming on Reacher Season 2 began back in September 2022 and is still in production. While the first season aired almost a year ago, Season 2 seems to be taking some time to wrap up shooting on location. According to an interview that Amazon Studios’ Head of Television, Vernon Sanders, gave to Collider, the series will return sometime in 2023.
Alan Ritchson confirmed that shooting for Reacher Season 2 had begun last fall with a funny Instagram video highlighting the show’s penchant for making everything “bigger and better than ever.” Carrying around a clapperboard to mark the official start of filming, Ritchson keeps bringing on larger and larger clapperboards to show off how huge the character of Jack Reacher is to audiences.
Due to a hectic schedule at Prime Video, with The Boys launching Season 4 in 2023 and Jennifer Lopez debuting Shotgun Wedding this month, there has yet to be a definitive premiere date set for Reacher Season 2. However, fans of the series should expect to watch Jack Reacher uncover new corruption, hopefully in the first half of 2023.
REACHER SEASON 2 WILL BE BASED ON LEE CHILD’S BOOK BAD LUCK AND TROUBLE
For Reacher Season 2, fans of the book series will be delighted to discover that Amazon plans to base the season on storylines from the novel Bad Luck and Trouble. The eleventh Jack Reacher book, Bad Luck and Trouble, was first published in 2007 and centers around Reacher’s life in Portland when he is thrust into another conspiracy that seems to be killing some of his oldest friends.
Viewers who have had a chance to binge-watch Reacher Season 1 can probably tell that the season was based on Killing Floor by Lee Child. This was the first novel in the Jack Reacher series and the debut book by Child, which was released in 1997.
The first season dealt heavily with Jack Reacher’s arrest for murder and his subsequent internal investigation of politicians, corporate businesses, and police officers who all had a hand in his arrest.
Similar to Reacher Season 1, Season 2 will most likely continue some of the same storylines that see Jack Reacher involving trusted allies in his investigations, much like he did with characters like Oscar Finlay (Malcolm Goodwin) and Roscoe Conklin (Willa Fitzgerald) in the first season.
Fans of the show should also expect that subsequent seasons of Reacher will not follow the timeline set out in the books by Lee Child. The chaotic nature of Jack Reacher’s character and those around him make it easy for the television adaptation to bounce around instead of sticking to a linear, chronological order of events.
Bad Luck and Trouble sees several of Reacher’s crew outsmarted and eventually killed, which leads Reacher to depend on a smaller workforce to stop the bloodshed. The novel is a fan-favorite amongst Child’s loyal audience, so Prime Video subscribers should expect Reacher Season 2 to live up to the hype.
ALAN RITCHSON IS RETURNING AS JACK REACHER
American actor Alan Ritchson is set to reprise his role as the titular Jack Reacher in Reacher Season 2. After Reacher leaves Margrave for hopefully the last time, Ritchson will embody the ex-police officer as he sets his sights on the colorful scene of Portland, Oregon.
Outside of Reacher, Ritchson is known to audiences for his role as Raphael in 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and his work on the HBO Max series Titans.
Alan Ritchson is also beginning his stint in the Fast & Furious franchise this year with the release of Fast X. He joins the tenth installment of the popular film series alongside Brie Larson and Cardi B.
Due to the general nature of the Jack Reacher character being a wanderer, it is unlikely that viewers will see recurring characters pop up from the first season of the series. One of the only characters that will most likely come back into the fold in Season 2 is private investigator Frances Neagley (Maria Sten). As a former military officer ally of Reacher’s, she is a mainstay of the novels and might also be a regular part of the series.
Joining Ritchson in Reacher Season 2 is a slate of newcomers, including actor Luke Tillerson who will portray Jack Reacher’s Army unit friend David O’Donnell.
Deadline reports that Season 2 will also feature Serinda Swan, Ferdinand Kingsley, and Rory Cochrane in significant roles. While Swan will take on the part of a special investigator named Karla Dixon, television veteran actor Cochrane will portray a private defense contractor security lead. Swan is best known for her role as Dr. Jenny Cooper on Coroner, and Cochrane enjoyed his time as series regular Tim Speedle on CSI: Miami.
Doctor Who performer Ferdinand Kingsley is set to play an undercover mercenary on Reacher Season 2. The upcoming eight-episode season will feature Luke Bilyk, Dean McKenzie, Domenick Lombardozzi, Edison Morales, Andres Collantes, Josh Blacker, and Al Sapienza in undisclosed roles.
NICK SANTORA IS STILL LEADING THE SERIES
The premiere of Reacher Season 2 is fast approaching later this year, and the show has writer Nick Santora to thank for much of its success. Reacher was initially developed by Santora, whose work comprises The Sopranos, Prison Break, and Scorpion. Since his time on Reacher, the New York native has been hard at work creating and executive producing the new Netflix television show FUBAR starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, set to debut on the streaming platform in 2023.
Reacher Season 2 will see the return of several executive producers and writers from Season 1. This includes Scott Sullivan, David Ellison, Don Granger, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross, and filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie. McQuarrie wrote and directed the 2012 Jack Reacher film starring Tom Cruise, and he will also premiere Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One with Cruise in 2023.
REACHER SEASON 2 WILL STREAM ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
Along with Hunters and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Reacher Season 2 will be available for streaming via Amazon Prime Video. The show’s first season is currently available to stream on Prime Video as well.
