Here we’ll look into the different terms and trivia having to do with the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise.
Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most recent Shonen anime, debuting in 2020, and to say it was an immediate hit would be an understatement.
The manga began in 2018 and has gone on to sell over 80 million copies, meaning it took only five years to become one of the best-selling series ever.
Now, three years after the anime’s release, fans are finally enjoying Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, which has been broken into two separate cour.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Cour 1 Explores The Past Of Satoru Gojo
The fan-favorite breakout character of Jujutsu Kaisen, Satoru Gojo (voiced in Japanese by Yuchi Nakamura and in English by Kaiji Tang) was a nominee for Male Character Of The Year at the 2021 Crunchyroll Awards, and for good reason.
Incredibly powerful with a striking design that features bandages over his eyes, Gojo is a teacher at Jujutsu High, trying to rein in his troublesome students, the series hero Yuji Itadori and Yuta Okkotsu.
Season 2 starts one year before he’s “the strongest,” with Gojo and his friend, Seguru Geto (and if that name sounds familiar, yes, it’s the same character), rescuing Utahime Iori and Mei Mei from a cursed house.
The younger Gojo (featuring cool blue glasses instead of his trademark bandages) is understandably more immature than his older self, while Geto is the calm and stoic one of the pair.
The two need to safely escort Riko Amanami, the chosen Plasma Star Vessel, that is to be merged with Master Tengen and prevent him from losing his humanity, which Gojo helpfully summarizes using Digimon evolutions.
The Magical World Of Jujutsu Kaisen
Following the adventures of an abnormally strong high schooler named Yuji Itadori that accidentally becomes the host of a powerful Curse, Ryomen Sukuna, resulting in a death sentence unless he can consume it.
Taken to Jujustu High, he starts training as a Sorceror alongside Megumi Fushigoro and Nobara Kugisaki, while under the watchful eye of their teacher, Satoru Gojo.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, and the prequel movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0, do a great job of bringing viewers into the modern, mystical world that has taken the anime world by storm.
While Season 1 was a fairly straightforward narrative of escalating stakes that hints at even greater darkness waiting to strike, Season 2 goes in a bold new direction as Itadori takes a backseat to the tale of his teacher.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Cour 1 Adapts The Hidden Inventory And Premature Death Arcs
The rest of the Hidden Inventory arc deals with Gojo and Goto protecting Riko from the assassins of the Q sect and the Time Vessel Association, which hired Toji Fushigoro (part of the Zenin family, which becomes important in the back half of Season 2) to retrieve the Plasma Star Vessel. As with Season 1, this results in multiple battle scenes that are exquisitely animated, with every episode showing off the animator’s attention to the tiniest detail.
While Jujutsu Kaisen’s amazing fights elevate the anime to the top echelons of Shonen anime, they aren’t the most memorable part of Season 2. Even if it only aired within the last month, Hidden Inventory is already being praised for adapting one of the most heartbreaking manga scenes, and we guarantee it will leave viewers devastated.
Hidden Inventory runs for the first four episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, followed by a one-year time skip for Premature Death. While the first arc deals with the standard anime battles, including a throwdown between Gojo and Fushigoro that must be seen to be believed, Premature Death is only one episode long, but it might be the single most important episode of the series so far.
Finally, the fallout between Gojo and Geto is explained, lending context to their showdown at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which it should be noted, still has a nearly perfect critic and audience score of 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Cour 2 Adapts The Shibyua Incident
The Shibuya Incident, which takes place over the back half of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, was a fan-favorite arc in the manga. When the Tokyo Special Ward is under attack by a massive army of Curses, it’s up to the Jujutsu Sorcerors to halt the invasion. Episode 30, the first part of The Shibuya Incident, airs on August 30, exclusively on Crunchyroll.
Following the heartbreaking events of Hidden Inventory and Premature Death, it will be nice to return to the present day, where for starters, it’s less creepy for Gojo to be offered a teacher’s number. Secondly, a return in tone to Season 1 will help the series from getting bogged down in tragedy. As well done as the previous arcs were, sometimes it’s fun to just watch destructive Curses get blown up.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Is Taking A Break Between Each Cour
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is going on a hiatus in between Premature Death and The Shibuya Incident, giving fans the perfect opportunity to get caught up with the series. This is good, as everyone needs to see the moment, Geto went from one of the school’s best students to a straight-up villain. The only reason it wasn’t part of our tragic anime moments list was because of spoilers for a recently aired episode.
Given the pandemic-influenced break between Season 1 and Season 2, waiting only two weeks for more episodes isn’t a lot to ask out of the growing fanbase. Once it starts up again, the second cours will run for 17 more episodes, releasing once a week for nearly the rest of the year. But for anyone that can’t wait, the series crossover with Fortnite has already started.
Jujutsu Kaisen Streams on Crunchyroll But There’s A Catch
Crunchyroll is the exclusive streaming home to Jujutsu Kaisen, with both subs and dubs available for users. However, only those on a premium plan, which starts at $7.99 a month, can watch beyond the first three episodes of the series. Anyone interested can sign up for a 14-day free trial, which is more than enough time to get caught up, before deciding if they want to pay for the second cour.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 started airing on July 20, with the second cour picking up on August 30.
