- Best Series: Knight Rider
- Most Popular Series: Baywatch
The Hoff. The man has built an empire around his name, an empire that involves singing and Baywatch. David Hasselhoff also has no problem poking fun at the star he’s become. He’s been part of major series and even was in Marvel before it was the franchise we know now. There could be a return to that character at some point.
So, where is The Hoff and what has he been up to lately?
DAVID HASSELHOFF IS ON INSTAGRAM
David Hasselhoff, now 68 years young, continues to work. You can find him making music videos and when he isn’t doing that, he is finding time on shows like Nightcap, Close Enough, and Young Sheldon. Much of it is promoted on his Instagram account which has 323K followers.
There’s the usual assortment of celebrity goings-on for the actor, but he has some fun as well. For instance, he showed off some of his farming “skills” recently.
Up next for The Hoff is Kung Fury 2 and then he will appear in the German TV series Ze Network which he’s been promoting on the social media platform.
HIS FIRST BIG ROLE WAS AS BONER IN REVENGER OF THE CHEERLEADERS
While David Hasselhoff’s career officially began on The Dean Martin Show in 1973, his first big break came in 1976 as Boner in the little-known feature, Revenge of the Cheerleaders. The film didn’t get much love, despite the raunchy nature of it, but it did get The Hoff’s foot in the door.
HE PLAYED SNAPPER FOSTER ON THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS
David Hasselhoff would continue his match toward world domination, ahem, stardom, by taking on the role of Dr. Snapper Foster on the long-running soap opera, The Young and the Restless.
It was a short-lived role, though it covered four years and was also a role that the Hoff would return to for a brief run in 2010.
DAVID HASSELHOFF STARS IN KNIGHT RIDER
The world was introduced to David Hasselhoff’s Michael Knight in 1982 and was immediately enthralled. Knight Rider was the series and it followed Knight, who was first known as Michael Long, and who was played by a completely different actor, for good reason.
Long, a Los Angeles Police Department detective, was on a special undercover assignment working at the Consolidated Chemical Corporation as a security guard in Las Vegas. In the pilot episode, Long finds himself betrayed by a female informant and is nearly killed by a gunshot to the head. What saves Long is a metal plate in his skull that he received from wounds in the Vietnam War.
Though Long doesn’t die, he suffers serious facial damage. Enter Knight Industries and Wayne Knight. Long is take to the Knight facility by its owner, billionaire Wayne Knight, where he saves Long’s life through his FLAG (Foundation for Law And Government) program. FLAG is a private crime-fighting unit out of Knight Industries.
The damage done to Long causes doctors to reconstruct his face, and this is where The Hoff makes his entrance. Given a new face and a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am named KITT (voiced by William Daniels), the pair solved many crimes, fought many battles, and won many hearts over the series’ four seasons.
David Hasselhoff would return to his famous role as Michael Knight on more than one occasion. The first was in the 1991 TV movie titled Knight Rider 2000 and then again in the 2008 TV movie Knight Rider, which was a backdoor pilot for the 2008 revival series Knight Rider.
A KNIGHT RIDER REBOOT HAPPENED WITHOUT HIM AND ANOTHER COULD BE ON THE WAY
In 2008, a Knight Rider reboot happened with Justin Bruening in the lead role. He played the son of David Hasselhoff’s original character though they were estranged which eliminated the need to bring the star back into the fold.
The series only lasted one season on NBC and was canceled. In the era of reboots, it’s not all that difficult to see why this was made. And there were plans in 2016 to make another version with Jusin Lin as the lead creative.
The Fast & Furious director seemed like a good fit, but there hasn’t been much movement on that front and Lin recently left the Fast franchise during filming for the final movie.
HE WAS MITCH BUCHANON ON BAYWATCH
The Hoff’s popularity didn’t stop when his Knight Rider series ended. Yes, he had a few projects but he was actively looking for his next Knight Rider. It came in 1989 and it came in waves. Big waves.
The Hoff found the beach to his liking when he took on the popular series Baywatch. The series followed Mitch Buchannon, a lifeguard who patrols the beaches in Southern California as well as Hawaii.
Baywatch was not an immediate hit out of the gates. In fact, it was ranked 73rd out of 103 shows, prompting NBC to cancel the series after one season. But Hasselhoff felt there was potential if handled correctly.
His faith paid off as he took over the series as an executive producer and pushed the series into the first-run syndication market. It was a move that paid off handsomely as Baywatch found their groove and their fans.
Baywatch and The Hoff enjoyed an 11-season run, a spin-off called Baywatch Nights, and three direct-to-video movies – Baywatch the Movie: Forbidden Paradise, Baywatch: White Thunder at Glacier Bay, and Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding.
Baywatch was also the launching pad for stars like Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Erika Eleniak, Yasmine Bleeth, and Alexandra Paul.
DAVID HASSELHOFF PLAYED NICK FURY BEFORE SAMUEL L. JACKSON
Michael Knight and Mitch Buchannon weren’t the only characters David Hasselhoff was known for. He was Nick Fury before Samuel L. Jackson made Nick Fury cool. The Hoff wore the eye patch in the 1998 made-for-TV movie Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. The movie was made to be another backdoor pilot for a possible Nick Fury series, but the film didn’t take.
Nick Fury was written by David S. Goyer, who would go on to bigger and better things with the Blade trilogy, the Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
With all of the old Marvel characters coming back into the mix because of the Multiverse, it almost seemed like we could have seen David Hasselhoff reprise the role in some fashion. That hasn’t been the case, but with the MCU anything is on the table.
DAVID HASSELHOFF IS ALSO A SINGER
Not only can David Hasselhoff act, but The Hoff can also sing. Hasselhoff made his television singing debut in 1977 on The Merv Griffin Show. Since that time, David Hasselhoff has released a total of 14 albums, his latest 2019s Open Your Eyes.
His music has been a hit around the world with Europe, especially Germany, truly taking a liking to Hasselhoff’s vocals.
HE STARRED ON BROADWAY IN JEKYLL & HYDE: THE MUSICAL
With all David Hasselhoff has accomplished musically, one would think Broadway would be a no-brainer. It was, though it came much later than he probably anticipated.
The Hoff finally made it to the mecca of musical production, Broadway, in 2000, starring in the title role of Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical. It was the fulfillment of a life-long dream for Hasselhoff, one that began as a 7-year-old when he first stepped on the stage in his school’s musical of Peter Pan.
OVER THE YEARS
One can’t say David Hasselhoff doesn’t know how to take a joke. Oftentimes during his hugely successful career, The Hoff has been asked to poke fun at his celebrity. Each and every time he has answered the bell.
Hasselhoff parodied himself famously in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. He took a shot at himself in DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story. He has appeared in other movies such as EuroTrip, Adam Sandler’s Click, and in Jamie Kennedy’s Kickin’ It Old School, simply having fun with himself. It’s nice to see when celebrities don’t take their fame so seriously.
