Ryan Reynolds Just Made Over A Billion Dollars But Not From Movies
T-Mobile has acquired Ryan Reynolds' Mint Mobile in a $1.35 billion business deal.
Ryan Reynolds just made over a billion dollars… Mint Mobile, which he owns a percentage of did. When Reynolds isn’t making new Deadpool movies or working for his alcohol company, Aviation Gin, he’s usually making improvised ads for Mint Mobile, which just got acquired by T-Mobile.
According to Variety, Mint Mobile made $1.35 billion in the deal, and since Ryan Reynolds owns 25 percent of the company, that means he got a pretty good pay cut as well. While Mint has been running off of T-Mobile’s network for years, the brand has been operating independently until now. With the acquisition, T-Mobile will now own all of Mint Mobile’s parent company, Ka’ena Corp., and its subsidiaries, including Mint, international wireless service Ultra Mobile, and wholesaler Plum.
The Mint Mobile deal is expected to close later this year. For those who love the Ryan Reynolds promos for Mint Mobile, there is nothing to fear because business at Mint will continue as usual. Mint Mobile founders David Glickman and Rizwan Kassim will continue working for Mint under the new T-Mobile umbrella, operating their department almost like it’s still a separate business unit, and Reynolds will continue making “borderline reckless” marketing promos for the company.
T-Mobile representatives have said that the company is excited “to leverage Mint’s industry-leading digital [direct-to-consumer] marketing expertise” as the wireless giant looks to reach new customer demographics and locations. The acquisition of Ryan Reynolds’ Mint Mobile is the most recent move T-Mobile has made in taking over the wireless industry, coming just a couple of years after the cell phone conglomerate merged with Sprint.
Ryan Reynolds made a statement discussing the Mint Mobile acquisition by T-Mobile, and in true Reynolds fashion, was as professional and business-like as ever. “We are so happy T-Mobile beat out an aggressive last-minute bid from my mom, Tammy Reynolds,” the X-Men: Origins actor said, “as we believe the excellence of their 5G network will provide a better strategic fit than my mom’s slightly-above-average mahjong skills.” The actor then exclaimed his pride for the Mint Mobile team and declared how the T-Mobile merge will provide a better experience for Mint customers.
Even though they are merging with a larger company, Mint Mobile’s prices will not change. T-Mobile will keep the same pricing plans currently offered at Mint, which start at $15 per month for unlimited talk and text and up to 4 GB of data per month. The $1.35 billion acquisition cost is also the maximum that T-Mobile will pay to Ryan Reynolds’ company, with the actual final amount depending on a variety of factors, including performance and capital adjustments.
Ryan Reynolds shared a green screen video on Twitter to announce the Mint Mobile merge with T-Mobile. In the video, the CEO of T-Mobile, Mike Sievert, announces the new acquisition and then introduces Reynolds. In what is probably the best cell phone company merge announcement ever made, the Free Guy actor deadpans a series of jokes before announcing how glad he is to have a new dad and embracing Sievert in a hug.
