The second-ever trailer for The Wolf Among Us 2, the sequel to the episodic graphic mystery-drama adventure game developed by the revered Telltale Studio, just dropped and revealed some exciting information. More specifically, it provided insight into the whereabouts of the gaming series’ protagonist, Bigby Wolf, a private investigator and a werewolf navigating the world of dysfunctional fairy tales. Still, most importantly, it also revealed the game’s release date and its new developer — Telltale Games. Confusing, we know, but we’ll explain later. For now, enjoy the game’s trailer below:
According to Comic Book, the game’s scheduled for a 2023 release window — as it’s specified in the trailer — releasing for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and PC. As you might’ve seen in the trailer, the upcoming game stars the same protagonist as its predecessor, and by all accounts, it looks just like the previous game developed by Telltale Games back in 2013. The game was initially announced in 2017, following the massive success of the first game, but its further development and release were halted when Telltale shuttered in 2018. However, as per our previous report, Telltale Games is back, and it’s apparently shifting into overdrive mode.
The Wolf Among Us 2‘s predecessor, called The Wolf Among Us: A Telltale Game, took place over five chapters which were released as episodes throughout 2013 and 2014, to generally favorable reviews by the game critics. Its narrative and gameplay managed to garner a cult following and generate strong interest in a second season, prompting Telltale Games to announce the sequel’s development back in 2017, scheduling its premiere for 2018 on personal computers, consoles, and mobile devices. However, by May 2018, Telltale announced the title’s delay, caused by the studio’s internal issues, rescheduling the premiere for 2019.
Unfortunately, in September 2028, Telltale Games closed most of its studio due to “insurmountable challenges,” canceling all of its developing projects, including the previously announced The Wolf Among Us 2. All of the company’s assets were acquired by LCG Entertainment, including the rights to The Wolf Among Us gaming series. Luckily, in 2019, LCG Entertainment announced its plans to resurrect Telltale Games and conduct business under the company name, revitalizing The Wolf Among Us 2, among other projects.
The game’s continued development, welcomed by the fans, was announced at The Game Awards 2019, establishing the game as a sequel to the first game, but still a prequel to the comic book series the games are based upon. The game is being developed in collaboration with AdHoc Studio — comprised of former Telltale Games devs — which will focus on the game’s narrative and cinematic elements, while the newly-revived Telltale Games implement gameplay and other designs into the upcoming The Wolf Among Us 2 video game.
It’s also worth mentioning that The Wolf Among Us 2 is being developed entirely from scratch since the company scrapped all the ideas and initial work done by the previous Telltale Games before its closure. In addition, the company decided to abandon the episodic approach to its releases and opted to develop all episodes of the sequel simultaneously. As we previously said, the game is now scheduled to release in 2023, though no specific date was revealed.
