Fans of the VR game The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners are going to be very happy today. The teams behind the game, Skybound Entertainment and Skydance Interactive, have just announced a sequel to the game titled The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution. Not the shortest title ever, but who cares when you’re getting more VR zombie-survival goodness. Check out the tweet from the teams below:
The sequel to the first TheWalking Dead: Saints and Sinners will continue the story of The Tourist, acting as a proper second chapter to the first outing. In the first Saints and Sinners game, players found themselves in the ruined city of New Orleans seeking out a massive supply cache known as the Reserve. Your character is also seemingly immune to the virus that has ravaged the rest of the world and turned them into flesh-eating Walkers (aka zombies). The game was a VR action-RPG adventure where you could battle walkers, other survivors, and make moral choices along the way. The game was well-liked by many for its atmosphere, action gameplay, survival elements, and branching moral choice system.
Though The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners was well-received it wasn’t the first time the franchise has dipped its toes into the gaming world. The episodic series from Telltale Games, in collaboration with Saints and Sinner’s Skybound Entertainment, was highly-regarded and told the story of Clementine and Lee and also featured branching moral choices. These games were highly narrative-driven, with dialogue options and quick-time events making up the bulk of the gameplay. The games did well enough to release four seasons, DLC, and a Michonne-based spin-off.
Unlike Saints and Sinners, the Telltale game series consisted of point-and-click adventures and didn’t really allow you to be in the literal shoes of the character. With the VR capabilities of the Saints and Sinners series, players can really immerse themselves in the world of The Walking Dead. And since zombies are creatures that land squarely in the horror genre, it would make sense that you would expect plenty of scares from your gaming experience. The first game delivered these in spades, creating horror moments that you can really only get in virtual reality.
The Walking Dead franchise is huge, with the original graphic novel, the show, and the show spin-offs all being hugely popular on their own. It’s no surprise that we’re going to continue to get games from this post-apocalyptic world. Not doing so would definitely be a missed opportunity for fans and creators of the franchise.
Though there’s no release date yet or even a window for release, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution is set to release on Playstation VR, Oculus Quest, and various other PC VR platforms. The release was announced in celebration of the second anniversary of the first game, which was released back in 2020. It’ll be exciting to see what new twists, turns, and features they create to put everyone back into the French Quarter of the world of The Walking Dead.
