The Last Of Us Story Won’t Be Finished, Hints Co-Creator
The Last of Us is perhaps one of the greatest video gaming series that originally launched on the PlayStation 3 console in 2013. It received its first remaster for the PlayStation 4 in 2014 and another remaster in 2022 for PlayStation 5. The sequel game, titled The Last of Us Part 2, originally launched on PS4 in 2020, with an upcoming remaster for PS5 and Season Two of the same name series scheduled for future releases. It’s obviously successful. However, according to GamesRadar+, The Last of Us Part 3 isn’t in the works.
Neil Druckmann, the co-creator and head of creative at Naughty Dog, recently spoke about the upcoming PlayStation 5 remaster of The Last of Us Part 2, insinuating that the studio currently has no plans for making The Last of Us Part 3. While he didn’t specifically state that the sequel isn’t in the making, he states that he’s unable to comment on the future of the series at this particular moment, shifting the discussion toward other projects that are currently in the works at Naughty Dog. While this isn’t indicative of anything, it doesn’t play well with the recent rumors surrounding the franchise.
From what we know so far, the narrative outline for The Last of Us Part 3 is already complete; it has been for the better part of the last three years. However, Naughty Dog had their plate filled with plenty of other work at the time, mainly with making their own content, while lowkey helping Santa Monica with their God of War Ragnarok. So, the work on a full-blown game script for The Last of Us Part 3 hasn’t happened in that time. But that didn’t mean that the work on the gaming segment of the multimedia franchise wasn’t done—Season 2 of the series and the game are still being developed.
The Last of Us Part 3 is perhaps not being worked on, but the development of The Last of Us multiplayer still remains active. Data miners have previously excavated segments of a multiplayer component in the previous games, suggesting that the multiplayer component was eventually abandoned during the development of The Last of Us Part 2. However, soon after, Naughty Dog announced the development of an unnamed multiplayer game placed in The Last of Us game universe.
There are also rumors that Naughty Dog is actually working on bringing The Last of Us Part 3 to life, which would make Druckmann’s statement a clever avoidance of truth with the end goal of revealing the game once the time has come. The rumors about The Last of Us Part 3 were fairly consistent, with the game featuring Ellie as the main protagonist. There were also rumors about Naughty Dog working on a brand new IP that’s entirely different from both The Last of Us and Uncharted. Without any official confirmation, it’s really hard to tell.
For whatever it’s worth, Druckmann also stated that The Last of Us universe has more stories to tell, and while that’s not a definitive “yes” on The Last of Us Part 3 development question, it’s not a definitive “no” either.
