It has now been officially announced that a brand-new Star Wars game is on its way from Lucasfilm Games and Skydance New Media. This is some fantastic news, although it may sound like a bit of a bummer for those waiting on a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel. This new game has been announced as a team-up effort, which will see Skydance further its expansion into the gaming sector. The production company that usually handles movie productions also announced it would be working on a Marvel game back in October. Now the company has set its sights on the richest sci-fi property in the world.
What is most exciting about the announcement of this new Star Wars game is that it has been reported to be a new Action/Adventure venture into the long-standing mythos of Star Wars. This new game can cover any number of eras within the universe, and it is said to be an all-new entry, meaning it’s something that fans have not quite seen before. Though there is a Knights of the Old Republic remake on the way, Skydance might attempt to target another era that has not been tackled just yet. The newest emergence of The Old Republic books and storylines could be something that Skydance and Lucasfilm attempt to create with one another. The new game also promises to be “richly cinematic.” This could mean it plans to follow the same formula as Jedi: Fallen Order. That game took place right after the events of Revenge of the Sith, which renamed Order 66 as “the purge.” This happening was the eradication and execution of the Jedi by the Sith. Fallen Order targeted something that fans already knew but put a great spin on it. Hopefully, Skydance finds a way to do the same.
Star Wars has plenty of lore that can be picked from in terms of creating a plot for a video game, but often people are wondering if the universe will ever stray away from the Skywalker saga, which is the primary base for most Star Wars stories. KOTOR was one of the best examples of a game that took the timeline back further to a time before Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and the others even existed. Quite honestly, that game had one of the best protagonists in Darth Revan as well.
Amy Hennig, president of Skydance New Media, has had plenty of experience in the gaming industry. She is an award-winning writer who once worked for Naughty Dog, the gaming studio behind such hits as Jak and Daxter and Uncharted. She formed Skydance New Media with veteran producer, Julian Bleak. The production company has hired a team of developers that have had more than 10 years of experience in the gaming industry, and it appears as if they are going to hit the ground running. Announcing a Marvel game, then a Star Wars game bodes well for the new gaming studio. The new Star Wars game has only just been announced, so expect not to see any concrete details about the game for a year or two. It’s still some exciting news that gamers will get to add another Star Wars story to the growing lineup which includes a KOTOR remake and a potential Jedi: Fallen Order sequel.
