The massive success of the Sonic films has surely changed things for the better in more ways than one. On top of being some of the best-adapted video game films ever, it appears as if everyone has caught Sonic fever again. It has been officially announced that a Sonic Origins collection is on its way to current and next-gen consoles. Whether this was in progress before the films came out, we are happy to receive this news. This new collection will contain Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD in a massive collection that is sure to fill us all full of nostalgia.
The usual process when releasing a collection is to bring a host of new features, and the Sonic Origins collection is doing just that. There will be a “Deluxe Digital Edition” that will come with extra perks, challenging missions, special character animations, and music from across other Sega Genesis titles. This could be specific to Sonic, or the collection might just throw out a curveball to us all and add some music from across the console’s lifecycle. The deluxe digital collection will have a $44.99 price, and the standard edition will run $39.99. The collection will be available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5. The collection will release on June 23rd, which is significant because it’s the canonical birthday of our favorite hedgehog.

The extra bonuses from buying the Sonic Origins Deluxe Digital Edition aren’t the only elements to be excited about within this collection. An additional Anniversary Mode has been added, which will feature a widescreen viewing feature and infinite lives. Also, in-game medallions can be won by completing some of the toughest challenges from the speedster games. Sega released an image of what the challenges will look like. You can see the image of the dashboard for the collection below:
The excitable and colorful seems to show what it might look like to collect and accomplish challenges across the four-game Sonic Origin collection. The graded ranks are sure to throw plenty of people into a frenzy to achieve the S-rank across all categories. The coin amount in the upper right corner is interesting as well. It could mean that in-game purchases can be made using this currency.
Sonic has exploded back onto the scene due to the massive popularity of the video game adaptations, and fans have long been clamoring for a new game, which is said to be on its way from Sega. In the meantime, we can all bask in the glory of the older entries on our newer consoles. Quite honestly, we couldn’t be more excited to play Sonic CD on a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. That entry always seemed to the forgotten in the myriad of Sonic releases.
Sonic Origins releases on Sonic’s birthday, June 23rd. Anyone who owns the last-gen and next-gen collections can dive back into the games that are equal parts fun and frustrating. Hopefully, we can play as the different characters across these games. Knuckles in Sonic CD would be great.
