The second wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC is adding a ton of new content to the game, bringing back some of the old elements and introducing the elements from other Mario Kart titles, like the tracks that were previously featured in Mario Kart Tour. The famous Coconut Mall track that was previously introduced also revealed a much-needed update within the second wave, considering that the first DLC wave removed one of its most important features.
According to IGN, the Booster Course Wave 2 DLC for Mario Kart 8 removed one of the original changes made to the Coconut Mall track in Wave 1. The update removed one of the track’s most beloved features; NPC cars driven by Shy Guys that would move forward and backward, acting as an annoying obstacle for the end of the race. Of course, fans weren’t happy about this, so Nintendo issued a crucial update to the track, which allowed Shy Guys to once again ram into players and disrupt their racing progress at the end of the stage.
For those who aren’t acquainted with Coconut Mall, the track that was introduced as part of the Booster Course Wave 1 DLC for Mario Kart 8 originally debuted in Mario Kart Wii. In the Nintendo Wii version of the track, the Shy Guys NPCs would act as obstacles at the end of the final lap. However, considering that the Mario Kart 8 version of the track also added Shy Guys as drivers, fans were disappointed to learn that once annoying obstacles now sit static on the track.
It’s still not known whether this was a bug or Shy Guys’ obstacles were intentionally removed, but following the release of Wave 1, and tons of fandom’s disapproval, Nintendo issued a statement about the issue being resolved in upcoming updates. In the updated version of Mario Kart 8’s Coconut Mall, the Shy Guy cars move once again during multiplayer or Grand Prix modes; they’re doing chaotic donut spins in their attempt to slow down players.
That said, these moving obstacles will remain idle during Time Trial play, so players attempting to beat their record and save Ghost Data won’t have to contend with additional obstacles. This propelled Coconut Mall to one of the best Mario Kart 8 DLC tracks, as players once again curse developers for their work as they crash into free-riding Shy Guys at the end of the race. Apparently, the fandom likes cursing developers for their due diligence better.
Of course, the internet couldn’t resist the massive meme potential the latest update possesses, and fans immediately took it upon themselves to comedically compare the donut spin-making Shy Guys to various cinematic and television releases featuring the same vehicular acrobatics. These comparisons include Mordecai and Rigby entering a donut-spinning competition, the Breaking Bad episode in which Walter White does donut spins in a red Dodge Challenger STR8, and many other examples.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an extended version of the Wii U racing game for Nintendo Switch, released in 2017. It became the best-selling Nintendo Switch game soon after its release, prompting fandom to wonder whether there would ever be a sequel to the game.
