IGN Fan Fest dropped a deeper look at bug-killing classes in Starship Troopers: Extermination.
Following a string of news regarding Starship Troopers, a 1997 flop turned cult classic, and its upcoming reboot, Offshore Industries just dropped an official trailer for an upcoming game based on the film. Admittedly, we already have a few Starship Troopers games, most of which came out in the mid-2000s as tabletops, but the upcoming release of Starship Troopers: Extermination is a modernized version of a co-op shooter, allowing gamers not only to shoot the bugs but be a supportive member of the team.
Starship Troopers: Extermination was briefly teased in 2022 by showcasing the propaganda recruitment videos as shown in the 1997 film, and the new trailer is revealing even more details to the fans while retaining the over-the-top propaganda theme. It highlights several playable classes in the game, such as the assault unit, heavy infantry, and a medic—or a support unit. The trailer also implies that the bugs within the game will initiate their relentless infestation, encouraging players to team up, build resources, and exterminate the giant-sized space pests.
The game will apparently focus on the boots-on-the-ground setting of its namesake, pitting gamers against hordes of massive insects, and its missions will revolve around gathering resources and establishing footholds. Starship Troopers: Extermination seems to offer a strong emphasis on defensive play, allowing players to choose how to set up defensive structures and turrets. Additionally, the player will be able to unlock new perks and gear as they progress by killing bugs—and there can be up to 100 Bugs visible on screen.
The Bugs in Starship Troopers: Extermination are also classified into types, including drones, warriors, gunners, plasma grenadiers, and tiger elites. The game will also have a Titanfall-like ping system for easier player-to-player communication in the middle of the firefight, which is certainly to come in handy as the number of bugs increases on the screen. The trailer ends with a prompt to wishlist the game on Steam, indicating an Early Access PC release, while other gaming platforms weren’t specified. The release date is set for the 2023 release window.
A bit vague, we agree, but the release date refers to an Early Access version of the game whilst also stating its level of development. If Starship Troopers: Extermination drops as Early Access in 2023, this could mean the game is nearly playable and less than 18 months away from the full-fledged release. Unfortunately, that’s only speculation since there’s no telling just how much time the game will spend in its Early Access phase. The highly anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3 was released as an Early Access game in 2020, and its release date is scheduled for August 2023.
Starship Troopers franchise began as a novel that won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960, despite criticism over the glorification of war and military, as well as possible fascist undertones — has anyone heard of the Warhammer 40k project Henry Cavill is currently working on? Starship Troopers: Extermination is a 12-player PVE first-person shooter scheduled for Early Access on PC in 2023.
