New Super Mario Game Has Been Leaked Early?
Is it here already?
This article is more than 2 years old
The Odyssey might not be over after all, as the recent leaks suggest that Nintendo is working on a sequel to the 2017 multiplayer action video game for Switch. Apparently, the portly plumber might not be ready to leave the Odyssey part of the franchise behind yet. With that said, other sources point out a possible spin-off and not another mainline entry to Mario’s story, which would be disappointing for the fandom. So, what are the newest rumors surrounding the new Super Mario game?
According to Comic Book, the new rumor comes from a well-known Nintendo leaker, Nate the Hate, an industry insider with a good track record. During a recent episode on their YouTube podcast, Nate discussed the hush in the industry regarding a high interest in a new Super Mario game being a Musou-style title. Nate’s report only confirms earlier reports that Koei Tecmo’s president, Hisashi Koinuma, the producer of Samurai Warriors 5, expressed interest in making such a video game, considering that The Legend of Zelda already got a Musou treatment with Hyrule Warriors, which was released in 2020.
For those that aren’t familiar with the concept, Musou games are Japanese hack-and-slash type of video games in which the player controls the protagonist fighting through hundreds of generic enemies, destroying them with relative ease. It’s the Japanese epitome of mindless fun. These are also known as the Warrior gaming franchises in the US and include games such as Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, etc. In regards to the purported new Super Mario game, Nate the Hate actually doesn’t know if the game is even in development at Koei Tecmo. All they’ve heard is that there’s an interest in making a new Super Mario game.
The thing about the gaming industry and its insiders and leakers is that, sometimes, rumors are just rumors, and nothing becomes of them. All things are subject to change, and the gaming industry is no exception. For example, based on the previous reports, Battlefield 2042 was supposed to be an exceptional gaming title, and we ended up with a semi-finished product that doesn’t even have a functional in-game voice chat. Unfortunately, Nate the Hate isn’t an exception; he was wrong about the alleged Nintendo Switch Pro development and release a few months back.
In his defense, he wasn’t the only one propagating or discussing the idea; sometimes things just turn out that way, gaming companies change their plans along the way, or even deliberately release bogus information to keep the fandom busy. It’s still worth pointing out that Nate the Hate relayed plenty of accurate information over the years, so we’ll let the Switch Pro rumor slide. And as we previously said, this particular rumor is hard to ignore, considering Zelda‘s Hyrule Warriors release.
This isn’t the only rumor regarding Nintendo’s largest franchise, and there are rumors regarding the next Super Mario Kart game being in development, which conveys a message that Nintendo might be aiming for another mainline release. Still, since none of the implicated parties offered official statements and comments, this information should the taken with a grain of salt. In the meantime, we’ll continue to monitor the situation for any further information on the matter.
