One of the best things about the Nintendo Switch is that there is a myriad of controllers that can be used on some of the oldest of games. There are wireless controllers that look and feel like the old Gamecube style. Wireless controllers that are based on the iconic Super Nintendo style. These are all varying models that allow gamers to return to when they were a child and play the older games the “traditional” way. Well, now a clever Twitter user has uncovered a patent for a new Pro Controller that could be making its way to storefronts at some point. While there is already a Pro Controller, Nintendo is certainly behind the curve on what controllers for next-gen consoles can certainly do. You can see the patent for the controller below:

The above picture seems to show what looks to be a combination of the current Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, but with a back that is reminiscent of the N64 design. There have been plenty of rumors surrounding the release of a Switch Pro console coming out as well, so this might be the newly designed controller for those means. One of the biggest aspects of new controllers is that of the haptic feedback that exists in the PS5 controller. Based on actions taken in-game, players can feel pullback or tension on the controller. The Switch could think about implementing this function in a potential new Pro Controller. Being able to feel yourself jump around as Mario would be fantastic.

There is certainly a market for an upgraded Nintendo Switch model. Though the company has just released a newer version of the console which contains an OLED screen, better battery life in terms of when you undock the Switch, and more internal storage, it is still in desperate need of an overhaul. The Switch has yet to be able to achieve 4K capabilities and catch up to technology that exists within the Xbox Series X/S and the PS5. Fans are clamoring for a pro model of the console and this new controller patent might be a clue into what is happening in the future. While having a clunky controller isn’t the best option for consoles, some prefer it.

The Nintendo Switch is one of the best consoles for family-friendly games, but there seems to be a bit of a divide when it comes to offering everything that hardcore games want. That divide starts with the limiting capabilities that the Switch currently has. However, if a pro model were to come out that would bring in 4K resolution and a controller that brings in some sort of haptic feedback, then that would be a great starting point for Nintendo. There are a ton of games that would do well with haptic feedback. Luigi’s Mansion and the pullback one gets from trying to suck in ghosts, the drawback on Link’s bow in Breath of the Wild, and maybe the acceleration one feels in Mario Kart. The options are limitless, and the hope is that this new patent is for something exciting. While the patent was approved in January for this controller, no further details have come out yet. Keep your eyes peeled for a potential Nintendo Switch Pro console announcement. We all need it.
