New Mortal Kombat Game On The Way?
This article is more than 2 years old
NetheRealm Studio’s Ed Boon, the iconic co-creator of the Mortal Kombat gaming series, announced that he wouldn’t be announcing any new gaming release at the upcoming The Game Awards show, scheduled for December 8. This news comes following a whole year of silence before which Boon conducted a poll regarding the remake of the original Mortal Kombat game and rumors that he might be behind the super-popular Multiversus — the latter was later disproven.
According to Kotaku, Boon shared an announcement on his Twitter account, stating that the surprise announcement of 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11 went great and that many fans are expecting the same thing to happen again. Unfortunately, he also shared that NetheRealm Studios (NRS) isn’t ready to share its next game yet. Admittedly, many fans have been expecting Boon and company to announce the next installment in the franchise, but according to Boon, that thing isn’t going to happen this year.
So, the chances are that NRS isn’t going to make a surprise announcement of their next Mortal Kombat or Injustice game. Both fighter game franchises have been doing great and have been backed up with a plethora of additional content, making sure that the games are kept up with the times.
This is especially true in the case of Mortal Kombat, which added so many fighters from other franchises — including Alien, Terminator, The Nightmare on Elm Street, God of War, etc. — that it’s safe to call it a crossover fighter game. Similar to Fortnite but much more violent and graphic.
However, Ed Boon is known for online trolling of his social media following, so there are those who think that he’s purposefully misleading the fandom and that NRS’s next game will be revealed in some four days’ time. Still, there’s no official confirmation regarding the announcement, apart from what Boon already shared, so fostering any kind of expectations could lead to disappointment. This is why we would prescribe that both the confirmation and refutation of any kind of game be taken with a grain of salt, regardless of whether we’re discussing Mortal Kombat or Injustice.
This isn’t the first time Boon has tried to manage the fandom’s expectations regarding Mortal Kombat or Injustice gaming series while attending gaming events. Just recently, he confirmed that while he will be attending The Game Awards show, he’s doing so as an attendee, not a presenter. But even with that said, there are fans who aren’t willing to take his words at face value alone, given his history of online trolling, and are holding out hope that NRS has some type of project announcement in store for the upcoming event.
As for what type of project that might be, well, Boon has narrowed it down to either Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3, but there’s also a possibility that he’s just joking and teasing the fandom while NRS is preparing something entirely different.
As previously stated, The Game Awards show is scheduled for December 8, and some of the nominees include God of War Ragnarok, the fantastic Elden Ring — which is perhaps the strongest contender for the Game of the Year award — A Plaque Tale: Requiem, and everyone’s beloved Stray.
