After months of speculation, it’s finally confirmed — a new Iron Man game is in the works, and Electronic Arts is the upcoming game’s publisher, with Motive serving as the developer for the title. This appears to be yet another high-budget effort by Marvel Games, following the footsteps of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Avengers, and the upcoming but delayed Marvel’s Midnight Suns. The project still hasn’t received any official title, but considering that it’s still in the pre-production phase, we’re bound to hear more in the upcoming months.
According to CBR, while still in pre-production, the upcoming Iron Man game has been announced as a single-player, third-person action-adventure, with some of the gaming industry’s prominent names attached. The game will feature an original story derived from the rich history of Iron Man comics that channels the complexity, charisma, and genius of Tony Stark, giving the players a sense of what it feels like to be one of the most popular Marvel heroes. It’s worth noting that the game is announced as one of several games in a multi-game partnership between EA and Marvel.
We previously reported on the rumors about the Iron Man game and the collaboration between EA, who recently lost some of its biggest franchises, and Marvel Games. The rumors stemmed from some of the most prominent gaming industry insiders, including Nick Baker, Tom Henderson, and Jeff Grubb — all of whom reported about the collaboration but haven’t been able (or willing) to say which character or superhero team would be featured in the upcoming title.
It was Jeff Grub who reported on Twitter that the Iron Man game is in development, noting that the rumored Black Panther game is also supposedly in EA’s workshop and that it would release some time after Iron Man. However, as per our previous report, the purported Black Panther game is being in the works under EA’s publishing and developed under Monolith Studios — the very same studio responsible for massive gaming projects such as Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and its Shadow of War sequel.
The news about Electronic Arts publishing the upcoming Iron Man game might be disheartening to some, considering that the company has lost several high-profile franchises in the past year or so and the fact that Battlefield 2042 is still a hot, heaping pile of mess. However, there’s still hope for the title since it is being developed by Motive, EA’s first-party studio credited with some above-average games, and the upcoming Dead Space remake, which, admittedly, looks fantastic.
The studio’s other titles, mostly related to the Star Wars franchise, fared well on the market, but the gaming community, especially those with over 20 decades of gaming experience, have criticized their “handholding” elements. Whether that’s going to be the case with the upcoming Iron Man game remains to be seen, but we’d like to point out that Marvel doesn’t tolerate failure when it comes to their IP, which is why we haven’t seen more Square Enix flops. Eidos-Montreal, Square Enix’s subsidiary, did a better job with the Guardians of the Galaxy game.
With everything said and done, the Iron Man game is still in pre-production, so we’re not likely to see it this year and quite possibly next year, either.
