In celebration of Star Trek Day, Gearbox Publishing and Cryptic Studios have revealed that the famous ensign from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wesley Crusher, is Star Trek Online’s next Terran Emperor. Actor Wil Wheaton, who portrayed Wesley in the television show, will once again reprise his role, but this time he won’t be the boy wonder with eidetic memory, but rather an evil tyrant from the Mirror Universe.

This is big news for the Star Trek Online fans since the true identity of the Terran emperor has been shrouded in mystery, though some have previously guessed that it was evil Wesley Crusher all along — basing their guesses on the clues hidden in the narrative’s questlines. As reported by Polygon, the Terran Emperor from the Mirror Universe apparently retains the powers of the original Wesley, which were granted to him during the show by The Traveler.

Interestingly enough, millions of fans were shocked by the Star Trek: Picard Season 2 finale when Wheaton made a cameo appearance at the end, which marked his return to the Star Trek franchise after 35 years. Wesley Crusher was a prominent figure in the series, but his story came to an apparent conclusion in the final season when he apparently joined The Travelers on their journey to explore other planes of reality. Well, it would seem the evil Wesley Crusher did the same, considering that they’re both wielding the same powers.

As for the gaming iteration, the evil Wesley Crusher is trying to assume control of The Other and utilize its massive powers for no good. It’s up to gamers to team up with an enemy-turned-ally, Admiral Leeta, and try to put an end to evil Wesley Crusher’s plans; these events will play out in Star Trek Online: Ascension, which is the next chapter of the game’s narrative that focuses on the Mirror Universe.

Besides the evil Wesley Crusher, the upcoming Star Trek Online: Ascension also introduces plenty of new content for players to discover, including new gaming modes, Officer Upgrade Systems, new rewards, and new ships. Additional details will become available when the story expansion releases on PC next week on September 13. Console versions will be slightly late, though Gearbox hasn’t specified by how much.

The game allows players to forge their own destiny as the Captain of a Federation starship, champion of evil Wesley Crusher’s Empire, a Klingon Warrior, a commander of the Romulan Republic Warbird, or a Dominion agent and Jem’Hadar soldier. The game is currently available on all major digital storefronts, including Steam, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Game Pass. As for the television segment of this massive franchise, the fans are still expecting the next season of Discovery; Star Trek: Picard just teased Season 3, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds just added a Broadway legend to its cast.

Star Trek 4, the fourth movie installment of the Kelvin Timeline films, has been postponed to December 22, 2023, after its director abandoned ship. While it won’t feature an evil Wesley Crusher, it would be fun to see Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Kirk and Spock once again.
