EA may have been in some trouble when Battlefront 2 was released, but that didn’t seem to affect one of their better games in the Star Wars universe. The publisher developed and launched Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes back in 2015 for mobile devices, and the game became an instant hit. This mobile collection RPG featured plenty of characters from across the sci-fi mythos that players could control and level up. Now EA has returned a storied franchise for their next mobile outing, Lord of the Rings. The newest mobile game that is meant to follow Galaxy of Heroes is called, Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth.
This is surprising news considering EA has not made a Lord of the Rings game in quite some time. They were the developers for some of the older game titles that directly followed the events of the films but also helped published other titles. The last game that EA published was Lord of the Rings: Conquest, which came out in 2009. Now the publisher has set its eyes on creating another expansive mobile game that will follow the formula of Galaxy of Heroes. Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will have a huge list of characters to choose from that spans all the films, which includes Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It will be a turn-based collectible RPG. EA has also promised this new entry will have high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations, and stylized art.
Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-Earth is the first mobile Lord of the Rings game that EA has ever produced. The studio aims to pull content that involves storylines, locations, characters, and lore from the films and the books. That is good news considering the films were based directly on J.R.R. Tolkien’s written materials. There is also a massive amount of lore to pull from, so EA won’t have any issues running out of material. We can’t wait to see Pippin use the power of “second lunch.”
If this new Lord of the Rings mobile game is anything like Galaxy of Heroes, everyone will be in for a treat. Especially those who are deep in the Tolkien lore. There are going to be plenty of characters to use that even the deepest fans might not see coming. That was certainly the case for the Star Wars entry. Sauron will hopefully make his mace swinging self into the game as well as a playable character. If not, EA will certainly have a missed opportunity there.
Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is currently in development with no timetable on the release currently. However, the studio is planning a limited, regional beta test this summer. This could mean that the mobile game might just release sometime in the fall, barring any major issues with the beta test. Hopefully, with how much flak EA got with the microtransactions in Battlefront 2, they won’t replicate those same mistakes in this new Lord of the Rings game. Look out for beta signups on mobile devices sometime soon.
