Last week, the Infinity Ward Twitter page went dark. Many were wondering what this could have meant before IGN decided to zoom in on the darkened picture that was the header image for the page. To no one’s surprise, brightening the picture showed the image of Ghost, the famed character from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. With Modern Warfare having already been released in 2019, it was announced that the sequel Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would soon be announced. Now Infinity Ward has officially announced the game with a new logo. You can see the image below:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was a rebooted version of the fan-favorite entry that came out back in 2007. Since the game had essentially been retooled but followed the same formula, fans began to speculate if Infinity Ward would follow suit by rebooting Modern Warfare 2, which stands as arguably the best game in franchise history. That is now the case, as the sequel to the 2019 Modern Warfare is on its way. This news was already revealed by the official Call of Duty Twitter page back in February. You can see this announcement below:
Although fans of Call of Duty had already known about Modern Warfare 2 being developed, today was the first reveal that it is on the way, albeit by just showing a logo. An exciting thing of note about this new chapter in the series is that there is going to be a brand-new engine used to develop Modern Warfare 2, along with the accompanying Warzone 2. Infinity Ward has stated that they are building the new version of the battle royale from the ground up. They promise “innovations” that have not been seen before. This year marks the first time in which a Call of Duty is not being released, as is the custom for the developers. This bodes well for the upcoming MW2, as it means the studio is taking its time to make something special.
Another thing of note is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is going to be a direct sequel to the 2019 game. It is not going to be a reboot of the original game which came out in 2009. Even though the 2019 Modern Warfare was a reboot, it did contain a lot of borrowed elements from the first game. That should certainly be the case for MW2 when it comes out. There are no details on its release, but it will likely be Q2 of 2023.
Call of Duty has had a long and storied history. The game had become stagnant in recent history, likely due to the myriad of releases that didn’t exactly excite many gamers. However, Warzone became something that many latched on to, and it has been quite fun. However, rampant cheaters have all but plagued the servers. Infinity Ward has its work cut out if it is going to create a new experience with Modern Warfare 2, and by extension, find some way to get rid of cheaters in Warzone 2 servers. We are hoping for the best.
