Zooey Deschanel Takes Strong Stance On New Girl Reboot
Zooey Deschanel is up for a New Girl revival, but only one with a limited run.
Zooey Deschanel is aware of the potential for a reboot or revival of her popular FOX sitcom New Girl and is open to the possibility of returning to the role of Jessica Day. According to an interview in the Wall Street Journal, the Almost Famous star would be interested in a New Girl revival, but only as long as it was in the short term. As Zooey Deschanel puts it, “I wouldn’t want to spend the rest of my life doing reboots,” but it sounds like she would be eager to put Jess’s collection of cardigans and glasses on once again.
New Girl was created by Elizabeth Meriwether (who would go on to create the acclaimed Hulu series The Dropout, starring Amanda Seyfried) and aired on FOX for seven seasons, gaining critical acclaim as it did so. While the show was initially positioned as a star vehicle for Zooey Deschanel, it quickly became apparent the draw of the show was the chemistry in its cast, and it largely transformed into more of an ensemble piece. Deschanel’s co-stars Jake Johnson (currently starring in The Minx), Lamorne Morris (Fargo), Max Greenfield (The Neighborhood), and Hannah Simone (Not Dead Yet) all became breakout stars based on the show’s anarchic yet heartfelt comedy.
New Girl has been off the air for five years, which is plenty of time for fans of Zooey Deschanel to get nostalgic enough for FOX to do something about it. Given that everything from 24 to House to Star Trek: Voyager is currently up for either a reboot or a revival, should New Girl be given any less? That does not even count shows like Justified or Fawlty Towers that are definitely getting a new shot at the airwaves, regardless of who has been asking for it.
Most recently, Zooey Deschanel appeared on the Apple TV+ series Physical alongside Rose Byrne. The comedy-drama series stars Byrne as a frustrated 1980s housewife who finds a new purpose (or obsession, more like) in the aerobic fitness craze of the decade, and has been lauded by critics for its lead’s performance and the contrast of its dark subject matter with its neon-lit aesthetic.
Zooey Deschanel will soon return to the Trolls franchise of films (from Illumination, the animation studio that recently released The Super Mario Bros. Movie) for Trolls Band Together, in which she will reprise the role of Bridget, a Troll scullery maid turned Queen. The movie will also star the voices of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Eric Andre, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Given that Zooey Deschanel seems pretty okay with returning to that particular series of films indefinitely, hopefully she can spare a little time for a short New Girl revival at some point.
