Zoe Saldana became one of the biggest fan-favorite actors in the entire MCU. Her portrayal of Gamora is one of those perfect-casted moments in Marvel’s continuity. The character had unfortunately seen her end at the hand of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, as he sacrificed his “daughter” to obtain the Soul Stone. Though the character is meant to be dead at this point, there are rumors that she is set to reappear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, Saldana has an idea of what a Gamora prequel would be about. According to her, “I feel like that taster [of Gamora’s childhood in Avengers: Infinity War] made me incredibly curious to know what that planet was like, what her species was like, because they were completely wiped out of existence. And because she carries such a big weight on herself, and to get know why and where that comes from was really great.”
The moment that Zoe Saldana is speaking on is the flashback scene during Avengers: Infinity War when the world catches a glimpse of how Gamora even ended up at the right-hand side of Thanos. The Mad Titan seemingly wiped out her entire planet and race, and he took on the small child as his newly crowned daughter. Saldana is interested in revisiting that moment and expanding on it further. With how flashbacks and prequels have worked so far in the MCU, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. The first Captain Marvel film did take place in the 1990s, so going back in time with a small Gamora being trained into a world-class assassin would be fantastic.
Another thing of note is that even though Gamora is dead, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is said to heavily involve her in the plot of the film. The rumors are that the central plot is going to be tied to the relationship between Gamora and Nebula. How that relationship concerns itself with the rest of the film is yet to be revealed. With Zoe Saldana pitching a sort of prequel film or moment for fans to think about, we could also potentially see that in the new Guardians film as well, considering that Gamora is important to the plot. Whatever does happen next, her character is certainly one that should be explored further, and it is likely that Saldana doesn’t want to stop playing this role just yet.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is said to be the last time that the team is together for the director, James Gunn, so it would make sense for the film to tie back into Gamora in some way. You can’t have a bittersweet goodbye while excluding one of the most important characters in the entire franchise. The film is slated for a May 23rd release, so we will have to wait and see how involved Gamora will be in the new film. Disney+ also has an opportunity to pick up a series about the assassin, considering the success of the spin-off shows like WandaVision, Falcon and Winter Soldier, and Loki. A Gamora series would make a great deal of sense and give them more time to go through her childhood on the planet, subsequent destroying, and years spent under the tutelage of Thanos. That could also mean convincing Josh Brolin to return as Thanos, but hey, it’s worth a shot. Crazier things have happened in the MCU.
