The bigger the franchise, the more rumors tend to stick to it. Marvel seemingly gets a new one almost every week, at least. This time, it is that Zoe Saldana will return as Gamora in a future season of Loki, according to We Got This Covered.
The last time we saw the Guardian was in Avengers: Endgame. Zoe Saldana’s character that we all know from the previous films, died in Infinity War. What we saw in the time heist movie was her variant from another timeline who was brought into the current timeline when an alternate Thanos attacked. The theory from these anonymous sources is that the Time Variance Authority will be hunting her down, much like they are doing right now in the series with the variant Loki, played by Sophia Di Martino (Flowers).
Marvel is taking each of its series in different directions. Some will be multi-seasoned shows, while others will be one-offs like WandaVision. Back in April, Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development Nate Moore said that a second outing with Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is possible. Then earlier this month, Production Weekly had a season 2 listed, seemingly confirming its potential existence. But Marvel has not made an official statement, so keep that in mind. It is also up in the air if it will go for more seasons after that. Per the report from We Got This Covered, Zoe Saldana could be a focal point in a second or third season.
No details are available on Zoe Saldana’s contract as neither she nor Kevin Fiege have made any statements about her future in saving the galaxy. Most of the actors have commented on their future with the superhero franchise. Paul Rudd, for example, who plays Ant-Man, has a “three-plus-plus” deal with Marvel, meaning he can appear in more than he already has with his fifth appearance coming with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Samuel L. Jackson might be done with his nine-picture deal, but he will return in Secret Invasion. The trend that these actors continue working with Marvel could suggest the possibility of this rumor having some validity, but don’t hold onto hope as you never know until something official comes along.
So far, Zoe Saldana has starred in four movies for Marvel with the two Guardians of the Galaxies, Infinity War, and Endgame. While her appearances are up in the air, two of her co-stars have commented on how they feel about moving forward. Star-Lord himself, Chris Pratt, told Slashfilm that he would “continue to work with them.” That makes sense as he will be seen in Thor: Love and Thunder. Meanwhile, Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, has said he will be done after Guardians 3.
From what we do know, Zoe Saldana will return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With James Gunn working on the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a television event featuring the Guardians in a holiday-themed story that will be available on Disney Plus, we should see Gamora appear as she is one of the core parts that make up the group of the cosmic misfits. That is scheduled to release in late 2022, while Guardians 3 is currently set for a May 23, 2023 release in theaters.
