The Catwoman Advice Zoe Kravitz Got From This Former Batman Villain
Zoe Kravitz got some Catwoman advice from a former supervillain actor.
Zoe Kravitz will be bringing her version of the famous comic book character Catwoman to life in Matt Reeves’s upcoming film The Batman. The young actress is stepping into a part that has been played by a number of iconic performers in the past. It isn’t surprising to hear that at least one former Catwoman decided to impart some sage advice to the new Selina Kyle.
Anne Hathaway portrayed the character of Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises back in 2012. While speaking with Collider, Hathaway decided to give Zoe Kravitz a big pointer about how she should approach the character.
“If I had any advice it would be literally don’t listen to anybody because I think the only way to play that role is to give your version of it,” said Hathaway with confidence. “All of us [Catwoman actors] had different directors and all of our interpretations were specific to the films that they were in,” added Hathaway. It sounds like she is telling Zoe Kravitz to just bring herself to the role and not feel too dependent on anything else that has come before.
That’s pretty good advice for Zoe Kravitz to follow. The character of Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman has been through nearly as many iterations as Batman. There is not a definitive take on the character though people surely have their favorites. The best thing that the new actress can do is try her best to embody the version of Catwoman that she has been given in the script by director Matt Reeves.
And from what we have seen of Zoe Kravitz in The Batman trailer, this looks like a Selina Kyle that might actually align the most with Anne Hathaway’s take on Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. Kravitz’s Catwoman is clearly a thief and does not seem to be too familiar with Batman during this time. It is likely that she is only landing on his radar for the first time when this new movie starts.
It should be made clear that Anne Hathaway is also nothing but happy for Zoe Kravitz taking on the role of Catwoman. “I’m so excited to see what she does with it. I thought she was a perfect choice,” said Hathaway. This sentiment seems to be echoed by the majority of fans who have seen Kravitz in the role so far. Considering that there are casting choices that garner some pretty awful reactions from fans, it has been great seeing people legitimately excited for Zoe Kravitz in the role.
We are going to have to wait and see just how integral Catwoman will be to the plot of The Batman. Zoe Kravitz is likely signed on for potential sequels, so we might not be getting a huge focus on Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman in this first outing with Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne/Batman. She could make an impression on Batman but her story might be saved for a later film. We simply don’t know at this point.
What we do know is that Zoe Kravitz is looking extremely confident in the role. She was spotted during the shoot and an intrepid photographer managed to grab some stunning photos that you can view in the Instagram embed above. Judging from these shots, it is possible that Kravitz is playing a version of Selina Kyle whose family lineage is tied into the crime families of Gotham City. If that is the case, Kravitz looks truly stunning in the role and could give fans one of the most complex Catwoman interpretations in Batman’s cinematic history.
The Batman is currently in the middle of production. Filming is taking place in and around London, and the shoot is scheduled to return to the United States at some point very soon. Will we be getting more peeks at Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman while production is underway? Or will Warner Bros. be going the extra mile to make sure nothing leaks out about this version of the feline femme fatale?
At least now we know that Anne Hathaway is on board with Zoe Kravitz taking on the role of Catwoman. Both actresses have assuredly brought their own unique talents and energies to the part of Selina Kyle, and it is very cool to see such support from someone who has played the role in the past. We all look forward to seeing what Zoe Kravitz will do with the role when The Batman eventually opens in theaters.
